Rooting hard for this one!
I made a comment today in conversation with a friend on the phone and then it really hit me
Think about it—. we are rolling out a vaccine that will stop this in a little over a year in the USA#1. If we just gave a damn about each other just a little we could have cut our losses by on the order of 90%.
And getting a rapid vaccine was the plan all along. Maybe even a bit faster than hoped but still in the 12-18 month timeframe.
We couldn’t make the sacrifices for each other for a year
We couldn’t come up with a sane plan to cycle openings and closings of business churches and schools to control the spread
We couldn’t support our neighbors when they lost their incomes due to controlling the virus
We couldn’t support our essential workers- from doctors to custodians in health care to the grocery store clerks and stockers.
We couldn’t wear a damn mask
We couldn’t provide leadership in so many states
We couldn’t discourage the crazy
While I so want to blame the whole 90% on trump there are so many more to blame. Nut job radio TV and websites. Covid denying pastors. Red legislatures and partisan judges, gerrymanders, idiots that can’t do a couple of holidays apart, wear masks, or not party, but less we forget, 75 million morons that voted for more of the same.
I don’t know how much even a W or mittens level of national leadership could have done. Sick as it sounds, the moron masses would have probably followed an R president down a rational path but would have railed about muh free-dumbs to Barack or Hilary.
In all reality, the willingness of so many to be led so far astray to their own needs and supposed principles. To let their judgements and hatreds of “other” to cloud any sense of fairness, decency, and sacrifice for the greater good.
I am pissed at Trump but for now at least I’m more pissed at the guy a couple of blocks over with his Trump signs still out and now “stop the steal”.

Nah, people do whatever the leader tells them to do. If W or Mittens were POTUS, they would have said “Wear a mask til we figure this out” and 75% of the country would have done so.
A lot of people here are smart so they can think critically. But the vast majority of Americans are stupid people that just do what they are told to do.
This really feels like where the lack of strong government guidelines leads to inertia. People did the whole wiping down thing and there never really was a concerted push to say, actually focus everything on ventilation
Do you bother telling these people and/or their families they are idiots?

1918 media a lot nicer than I am
oh yeah… ‘oh you’re super sick, did you know that you’re an idiot too?’ Went down real well, can’t wait for my patient satisfaction scores to come back.
"Do you believe in Darwinism?
“What’s that?”
“Exactly. Hope your will is updated.”
Unfortunately named sign. Location for my un social distanced work christmas lunch.
My state in Australia has had 6 weeks without a case or a death. After our super hard lockdown.
We earned this.
Must be nice to live in a functional society. Enjoy!
GSK/Sanofi vaccine delayed due to low immune response
The British pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline and its French partner Sanofi have said their vaccine against the coronavirus will not be ready until the end of next year.
Interim test results showed only a low immune response in older adults, the companies said.
They will now begin a second-phase study in February, in the hope of rolling out a more effective vaccine in 2021.
The “protein adjuvant vaccine” is based on the technology used by Sanofi to produce a flu vaccine, as well as GSK’s established pandemic technology.
Research showed an immune response comparable to patients who recovered from Covid-19 in adults aged 18 to 49 but an “insufficient response” in older adults.
The companies said this was “likely” to be due to older people having an insufficient concentration of the antigen - the protein that stimulates the body’s immune response against the virus.
UK and Russian scientists are teaming up to trial a combination of the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Sputnik V vaccines to see if protection against Covid-19 can be improved.
Mixing two similar vaccines could lead to a better immune response in people.
The trials, to be held in Russia, will involve over-18s, although it’s not clear how many people will be involved.
Instead we’re currently at 3 straight 9/11s and will officially cross 300k dead this morning.
Here’s where I feel like war powers act should come in. If a pharma company came up with an ineffective vaccine, or needs dramatically more time for their trials, then shouldn’t we compel them to manufacture the successful vaccine from Pfizer instead?
Am I being paranoid or is it a pretty bad idea to be making it so public where all the vaccine is coming from in Kalamazoo?
Why not both?
Certainly possible.
Honestly, Obama or Hillary would have been able to do the job fine too. Trump was too inept to realize that it was bad for him to let a deadly plague spread like wildfire, but any normal politician would have knocked it out of the park. Trump should have strolled to a crushing election victory on the back of COVID.
It also needs to be more widely recognized how epically our public health organizations shat the bed on this one. If you were going to be limited to one information source to deal with this pandemic, would you rather it be the entire public output of the CDC (the world’s preeminent health organization, charged with leading the battle against infectious disease) or Zeynep Tufecki’s twitter feed (a freelance writer)?
Holy shit - this is a real person. I assumed it was some Eastern European character from a John Irving novel.
