If you’re going to break containment, at least do better than this.
The plan was to arrive after my mom and stepdad were done eating, then go swim in the outdoor pool. Timing fail. They wanted to watch the baseball game. I was trapped. Hopefully the crappy fish tacos don’t cost me my life. It was pretty empty inside at least.
Unlike previous epidemics, in addressing COVID-19 nearly all international health organizations and national health ministries have treated a single positive result from a PCR-based test as confirmation of infection, even in asymptomatic persons without any history of exposure. This is based on a widespread belief that positive results in these tests are highly reliable. However, data on PCR-based tests for similar viruses show that PCR-based testing produces enough false positive results to make positive results highly unreliable over a broad range of real-world scenarios. This has clinical and case management implications, and affects an array of epidemiological statistics, including the asymptomatic ratio, prevalence, and hospitalization and death rates. Steps should be taken to raise awareness of false positives, reduce their frequency, and mitigate their effects. In the interim, positive results in asymptomatic individuals that haven’t been confirmed by a second test should be considered suspect.
Well great.
When my kids were very little I would start a long drive at like 9pm and everyone would sleep but me and I would drive through the night. That was a mistake. It’s very dangerous, probably more dangerous than getting covid, let alone staying at a hotel and taking a chance at getting exposed.
But at some point I was just like, pull over and sleep in the car. I never looked back. I will pull off the freeway at rush hour in a 30 mile ride if I’m sleepy and take a nap. I even had a spot in Culver City that I would frequent.
Not that this is a solution. You may not want to do your sleeping in one hour or whatever blocks at rest stops or whatever, but it’s really not dangerous, and the kids will sleep fine. Or get a hotel. But no one should drive if they are having to swig coffee and slap themselves in the face to stay awake.
Nah each county is a household
Incredibly dangerous and something I struggled with at work doing nights and whatnot. I power through most of the time, but that’s really dumb. Batting 1.000 though so far
But if we had real test and trace with a reasonable test and time to result then this would likely happen. But our testing sucks so there is not much choice but to act as if the results are accurate.
It’s interesting anecdotally that the false positives in sports seem to be often bunched by lab batch. That’s a very different problem than a random event (likely a lab error). Of course when a team all of sudden spins out 10 positives will get noticed. If those are 10 people spread across a county in might never get noticed.
That’s pretty much suicide unless:
a) You can Ms.T can reliably alternate shifts, or
b) You can nap at rest stops before getting dangerously tired.
An occasional short nap makes all the difference. 2 naps would probably suffice.
If leaving first thing next morning is an option, that would also make a world of difference and you might need not need any naps or caffeine.
Without sleep breaks, the dark hours would be the (possibly) easy part. If you’re very tired when daylight comes, it will be nearly impossible to keep your eyes open because the light will make them super heavy. I learned this the scary way.
Yeah we’ve all done it. The problem is that if you bat .998 you’re probably dead.
This. I find a McDonalds parking lot or something - maybe a 30 minute nap is all it takes. Sometimes up to 2 hours.
Also ritalin.
Cocaine*
I have also taken quick naps on long drives. Driving tired is super dangerous.
It should be noted that sleeping in your car is also dangerous if you are Black in America. Police might arrest you or put a few bullets in you.
Well then you’re probably passed out from drugs and the car is stolen as it is registered to a Michael Bennett, so probably a white dude.
I have another sore throat, this one slightly worse than the last where I got tested and it was negative. That was three weeks ago and this one just started. Wondering if I should get tested again
I put this in the “limit contact with others and monitor” bucket.
I wish we had a competent government that was tracking and following up with large numbers of cases to understand how covid typically presents itself, but from what I have heard from just about everyone who has had it or knows someone who had it, fever and loss of taste/smell are the hallmark symptoms, and come prior to respiratory symptoms.
Seems like you should figure out what it is even if it isn’t COVID.
I get sore throats a lot, but due to isolation hadn’t gotten one since January and now two in a month. I just bought a house and am supposed to have the walk thru with the wife today before closing.
Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC reopened today
There were long lines of people waiting to get in when I walked by this morning. They all seemed to be wearing masks, so I’m guessing its a requirement.
It’s probably just a sore throat.
I find Propolis (don’t know what it’s called there) helps a lot.
