COVID-19: Chapter 4 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Italy has suffered some of the world’s worst COVID-19 death tolls, but fewer people are being admitted to hospital compared to three months ago, and in some regions, “even the patients that are admitted, especially in emergency, are less severe,” said Dr. Matteo Bassetti, director of an infectious disease clinic at San Martino Hospital in Genoa.

“They have fever, some respiratory symptoms. They have cough. But even in similar ages, they don’t have the same aggressive picture they had three months ago.”

“I am not suggesting not to use the masks, or not to wash the hands or not stay one metre (in Canada, the official advice is two metres) away from the other,” Bassetti said.

“I am just giving the clinical impression, and the clinical impression is the disease is different. I am more optimistic than I was three months ago.”

Lots of interesting stuff in here. I wonder if summer could be a factor in less severe cases. It makes sense that if winter cold and heated air playing havoc with your mucus membranes is a factor - then maybe on average people get a milder initial dose in summer.

100000 trucks a week though.

I had to google this. My googling says 30,000/day which surprises me.

Is the percent test change a rolling average or just day to day? Sometimes I do sloped averages (linear regression) and only highlight those with decent R^2, say above 0.6.

Haven’t looked at % positive but I think 7DRA should be enough?

It is really really hard to look at these things daily. There is some understandable batching effects (timing or reporting, delayed results, sometimes corrections or changes to update methodology, nefarious bullshit, etc). Somehow need to look for these outliers.

Los Angeles officials say that America’s most populous county is ready for its next wave of reopenings, announcing today that bars will be allowed to return to service tomorrow. The news comes just weeks after the surprise reopening of restaurant dining rooms at 60 percent capacity, and less than a week after county health official Dr. Barbara Ferrer told reporters that half of the 2,000 restaurants they inspected were not safely following health guidelines to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus.

That doesn’t count endorsements, though.

I don’t remember which thread I was in but here is my Delaware beach TR

All kinds of electronic signage in Delaware saying things like Coronavirus courteous” and “cars 2 seconds apart, people 6 feet”.

Small spot of rain around Dover threatened to ruin the day. I had to almost literally bite me tongue off not to say anything after successfully keeping my mouth shut with the getting going ordeal in the AM. Got lucky and rain missed Rehoboth beach by about 10 miles to the west. Beautiful day. (Rehoboth is about where the Delaware Bay dumps in the ocean).

Parked out a few blocks to get some steps in. We put our masks on about 4 blocks from the beach when foot traffic picked up. Not super busy for a summer Friday. Not empty but more like a weekday morning not Friday at 2pm in the summer. Masks on street at about 25%.

All businesses with very strict signage requiring masks- state regulation? All staff observed serving outside customers wearing masks.

Ate at Go fish British pub. They have 3 tables by the curb wo chairs. You have to ask for seating but then they come out to serve and bring the chairs. We are the only ones at the outdoor tables. Everyone else is “to go” or eating inside. I did peak inside and they had every other booth closed off. Lol masks. Looks like as soon as the food came, if not the drinks, the masks were off inside.

Very good fish and chips. Can’t say best in DE since no comparison. Haddock, light breading. Tasty, moist but not greasy. Above average fries. Very satisfying. $14. Overall 7/10. The Mrs enjoyed her crab dip app and chicken N chips with same breading as the fish.

Then we head to the boardwalk. Requirement is for masks on boardwalk. Recommended on beach. We decided to not do the beach and just walked and sat along the boardwalk.

Masks on boardwalk were probably 2/3-3/4. One out of three cops observed was reminding people to put on their masks. 3 teen boys had no masks so they were told to walk on beach. Of course lol as soon as the cop left they went back to the boardwalk scoping out teen girls.

Beach looked like people did a good job of even spacing their blankets/umbrellas. Again, a good number of folks but not crowded. Really couldn’t tell about masks from our vantage point. Nice breezy day with storms to the west so I doubt much chance of transmission outside.

After a couple of hours we headed back to find a MF $30 ticket on the car after using the Park Mobile App, paying $6 for 3 hours.

The parking pay place was only a couple of blocks so drove over to bitch. The wife has a college vanity plate SU ABC but the SU is small sideways and the ABC is the big letters. In PA it is written as SUABC so that’s how the car is in the app. Douche at the desk says the meter guy just entered in the ABC and got no match so therefore ticket. He acts like he is doing me a favor by letting this one go and marking it as “warning” $0. Says to be sure to check online Monday to make sure it went through OK. Smiled through my MF mask and said Thank you.

Stopped and picked up some Boston Market to take home for easy dinner. Only problem there is that they were taking orders too fast and the area in front of the counter got a little crowded so we moved to the empty seating area. They really shouldnt wait on the next customer until the 3 6’ spots along the front counter have finished at each station.

So ended up with some sun, a somewhat proverbially bitten tongue, some encouragement that DE is doing a decent (not perfect) Cv job, a very happy tummy and a happy wife. Success.

Maybe look at a slope of the 7DRA.

Lemme give you one of these for your pictures:

Way too lazy and tired to rotate.

PGA Tour Pro Nick Watney has tested positive for coronavirus.

Prediction: if any more players test positive, that’ll be it for golf this season, and the other sports leagues planning to make a go of it will quickly follow suit and cancel their seasons.

If you think players risking COVID infection without compensation is bad, you’re going to hate to learn they are sometimes suffering such severe brain damage in their early 20s that they are killing themselves.

It would be amazing if something fundamental has changed to make this thing less deadly. I would even put up with inevitable claims from Trump that he personally defeated COVID, or whatever.

Oh shit coronavirus making a comeback in the Czech Republic. Back to back days of 100+ new cases.

Last time that happened? April 20th and 21st. Fucking 2 months ago. Wouldn’t be surprised if they start implementing the restrictions again.

Was nice to live a normal(ish) life for a month I guess.

Austria is also trending up again.

My state in Australia (20% of country’s population) just had 25 in a day after we had days with single digits nation wide during the last month. Government already cancelled easing of restrictions.

Idnes, a Czech news site, actually stopped actively reporting on covid19 just 2 days ago. Same applied for a few other sites as well.

Gotta wonder if there’s a political appetite to reset things. It’s sure to destroy Babiš after he declared that it was defeated. Hell, it could be the thing that forces his resignation (as if he hasn’t done enough to justify it already).

Geez. Something that stays contagious for two weeks and can “hide” in asymptomatics canes back as soon as restrictions are lessened.

Who the hell could have guessed that?

The outbreak is local to two districts in the CR, both of which are on the Czech-Polish border. One district outbreak started in a coal mine and another was in a retirement home. And of course it’s still in Prague to a limited extent.

It’s a matter of time before they can no longer contain it though.

update on the situation in the Netherlands:

Life is returning to somewhat normal, except that many are still working from home and in many places people are taking the precautions that are mandated.

People are starting become more careless though and crowds are starting to get bigger than what they should be. Pubs and restaurants are open at limited capacity and people need to maintain 6 feet distance, yet on these nice summer evenings distance is not maintained properly and even when pubs and terraces aren’t exactly full, there are more people out there than there should be.

Since the beginning of the month, everybody can get tested when they suspect they might have COVID. Consequently, the positive rate for tests has dropped below 2%. There are between 100 and 200 new infections reported daily. Hospital admissions have dropped to single digits daily and same is true for ICU admissions.

three days ago, the first day without a single ICU admissions happened.

As you can see the virus has been controlled, but it’s not gone and the risk of a new increase in cases is still very real.

This is the chart of daily ICU admissions for COVID-19:
