Especially with the South opening up this week. We can expect in two weeks the West Coast states will institute a lockdown until at least mid July after seeing the disaster about to unfold in the South.

Yes but it was okay to call him ā€œsonā€ becauseā€¦ We all know why.

I for one, would not want Trump looking foolish answering a question.

It is awesome 95% of the press conferences have nothing to do with the virus.

Itā€™s not just the south

Colorado also

Fuuuuuuck.

Yeah, thats not looking good. Large businesses can open as of May 4th?

Theyā€™re fucked too.

We are much more likely heading towards your numbers than any current models, since the models arenā€™t taking into account the pure idiocy of entire regions returning to normal while we are still in the very height of the curve.

ā€œPolis said that he accepts that most Coloradans will likely be infected unless a vaccine is developed.ā€

Yeah, we all think that too, Jared. The difference is we arenā€™t going to attempt to overflow our hospitals while we wait for a vaccine.

Stupid fuck.

Yup

Economy >> lives to our country

One of the scariest things about Colorado is they are one of the few states that havenā€™t shut down schooling for the rest of the academic year. They are able to open starting May 1.

Fuck

Oh wow

I really thought all schools would be done for the year.

I guess I overestimated the government.

Hopefully the local governments donā€™t actually open them back up.

Two thoughts:

  1. Polis is a Dem, so this is somewhat surprising. I wonder if the briefings leaders are getting on the economy are more dire than we think. 1% in unemployment = 40,000 lives. Two years of 20% higher unemployment = 1.6M lives.

  2. Do people go along with it? Or are they too scared? My guess is most go along with it. My guess is that faced with a choice to open now or wait 1 year, many people would choose open now. Weā€™ll see how that looks in a month. I think most support for a lockdown is predicated on it being ~1-2 months max.

Youā€™re probably right, but whether or not support for a lockdown is there, the important thing is whether or not it is the correct move.

Fuck popularity.

I mean, these assholes out protesting are always complaining about political correctness running amok. Fuck political correctness and whether or not this is right or wrong politically. The healthcare system will be decimated if this is done incorrectly.

I agree, but there are two problems. The first is weā€™ve already fucked up doing it correctly. That ship sailed and sank. The question now is which is worse, taking our lumps in the economy from the shutdown or taking our lumps from the virus. Both have a death toll, and Iā€™m no longer sure which is higher.

The second problem is that the popularity is critical to the political capital to shut down for extended periods. It requires a degree of buy-in from the citizens and cooperation between state legislatures and governors, then from businesses. Also from courts. So the popularity matters.

Iā€™m not talking about the stock market crashing. Iā€™m talking about 20-30% unemployment for 1-2 years.

My plan A was UBI and a rent/mortgage freeze coupled with a lockdown.

Plan B was a shutdown to buy time to ramp up testing and medical capacities and produce enough PPE for everyone to mask up so we could reopen slowly in stages and keep the spread low.

Neither of those is happening anytime soon in USA#1. I donā€™t think anyone knows what will cause more death and suffering between a prolonged shutdown and a reckless reopening. Itā€™s like being at gunpoint and picking between two revolvers to play Russian roulette with, knowing one has more bullets than the other with no way to know which was which.

Of course you could have known but you stared at the sun during an eclipse, tough break.

Essentially, though, once you accept that we have blown Plans A and B as a country, you have to change the calculus and bake in the Trump factor and then itā€™s a matter of degrees of WAAF.

Itā€™s not racism, sheā€™s just pointing out how much older and wiser she is at the age of (checks Wikipedia) 23.
