Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I had one guy pull up a chair outside and watch the entire job - every minute, which was probably 3 or 4 days.

just caught a bit of a documentary last night about this hermit Russian gal that has lived in the Taiga region all her life, and she has an immunity to ticks, lyme disease and some other tick-borne illnesses

Vail and Alterra (the two giant conglomerates) closed all their resorts in North America starting tomorrow.

We know this because we were planning a quick RV trip to Tahoe to at least get in a couple powder days during what will be the biggest storm of the season. Guess not. Squaw is supposed to get a couple feet :frowning:

I wonder if holding one’s breath is a sign of lung capacity, so you could divide by 5 for a serious case of pneumonia and arrive at the breath you could draw lmao

I don’t know who owns what, but yeah, a quick check shows several Utah resorts closing tomorrow. I’m sorry you missed out.

but the most soothing data is that Italy is the hardest-hit nation with 350 cases per 1-million-in-population.

so that’s less than 1 case per 3,000 citizens… and then factor in a 2 or 3% fatality rate for every one infected, and it’s something positive to consider

Italy fatality numbers are a fair bit higher than that right now. Think I’ve seen just under 7 lately. We’re gonna get swings based on care availability because so many people infected need it.

and south korea’s are far fewer

still my point stands… say Italy’s is 10%

that would still be 1 of every 15,000 Italians dies from the disease

The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function.

Just super. That’s just great. Especially since the health inspection is apparently just a formality. A relic from when we were still trying to contain this thing. But lets cram everyone into a tight space for hours anyway.

Also crop that image for the love of god.

Would strongly guess left-leaning or apolitical based on location, nature of the woman they are friendly with and nature of the hobby group.

Hmmm. Well I don’t have enough money for land in the mountains so I think I’ll just have to risk it. I do know a guy with a man-sized safe full of guns. If the shit hits the fan I’ll head to his house.

I think stocking up on weapons is kind of just how you express sublimated panic in America. Here we buy toilet paper.

We do that too. We haven’t had a war on our soil in 160 years and that was just us attacking ourselves. The worst thing most Americans alive know is a couple buildings falling and 3k people dying. Shit that happens weekly in some parts of the world. We are the most easily terrified people on the planet.

Australia’s PM announced new coronavirus measures today. The biggest one is that all arrivals to Australia from overseas, even Australian citizens, will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. Also, cruise ships are banned from making port for the next 30 days. He declined to close schools, which I think is a bad decision. Australians were also asked to refrain from shaking hands. As of Monday, gatherings of more than 500 people aren’t supposed to happen, but I don’t think there are penalties or anything.

Dude clearly this is the best policy. Just let em in. Bathe in corona. Make sure anyone who doesn’t already have it does by the time they leave the airport. Send them back to Paola, KS.

This country is also soft as hell, obviously. We are definitely less easily terrified than America, but I don’t know by how much. There’s a cultural norm about not whining about stuff and just getting on with it - the common insult/stereotype for British people is the whinging pom, intended as a counterpoint to the stoic Australian. Our cultural wartime touchstone is Gallipoli, a WW1 battle where our soldiers got slaughtered, again the emphasis is on resilience in adversity rather than, you know, actually winning or anything. How much this cultural myth-making matters when push comes to shove, I don’t know. Probably not zero, but probably not a long way from it.
