Coronavirus (COVID-19)

@beetlejuice and other lab bros:

What should this test really cost before the job creators get their greasy hands on it? It can’t be that much if SK is pushing through the reported volume can it?

@suzzer99

2 cases in MB

Link the test you’re talking about and I’ll try to figure it out

I don’t want to heart this kind of post, but we all know there’s a decent chance this is true.

That’s for other strains of corona virus that existed previously.

There is a SARS vaccine?

Convince me that I shouldn’t play poker this weekend.

This might be my last weekend for the next couple of months to make money…and this is how I make money. Out of the 50-some Fridays and Saturdays in a year, the number where I don’t spend 10+ hours playing poker is probably countable on one hand.

It’s sad to say that poker is also a significant part of my social life. I worry about the people I play with and especially about the people who work in the poker room. I realize I have some anxiety about how everyone is doing. I have a strong desire to make sure they understand what is going on and make an informed decision on whether to play. They respect my opinion and if I’m not there, they will default to trusting a very Republican, Trump-loving doctor who is a regular on issues like this. I might be the only one informed enough and willing enough to push back against him if he spouts BS.

I live in a state where there are still only single-digit cases on the NY Times map. I don’t have regular contact or have to care for anyone who is at greater risk. I haven’t played online since Black Friday and I was never a great online player.

How crazy am I if I decide to put in my usual 25+ hours this weekend and re-evaluate after that (although I strongly suspect I am going to decide to not play next weekend)?

Have you seen Blast from the Past Johnny?

Thanks. I found one of the exact products I have listed on this list. And another product with the same exact active ingredients as my other product. (This one was a liquid that needs to be diluted. But the dilution chart shows that the concentration in my wipes is more concentrated than the diluted solution so I think I’m good.)

Mormon Church has cancelled and shut down all gatherings and all worship services everywhere in the world indefinitely.

I don’t think you should play poker, but honestly, at the unbelievable rate things are happening right now, I’m not sure you’ll even be able to play poker by this weekend.

Yes, and it almost certainly means it will also kill this one. See the EPA list of approved disinfectants posted just up thread. If you drill into there approvals, they are all dated prior to CV-19 becoming a thing. So EPA is making the same assumption I’m making.

It looks like they’re doing RT-PCR although they’re not specific, they’re just saying nucleic acid amplification. RT-PCR costs like $80 per try if you buy the kit from Promega and $20 for custom primers from thermofisher.

Plus a thermocycler which is a pretty expensive machine. Probably want a gradient thermocycler to fine tune it, those are like tens of thousands of dollars. Gel electrophoresis machine and agarose, that’s cheap, couple hundred bucks probably. DNA ladders, that’s probably another 10$. Then the imaging machine costs a bundle too, there are cheaper ones too though that don’t go through computers.

And like overall it would take probably 6 hours of my time, so like $150 in labor. So like $300 all in but it’s also a big investment to buy the thermocycler and you need a -20C freezer too and those are probably expensive

In fairness, all the Mormon Church gatherings in the world occur in Salt Lake City.

Not sure if joking, but:
