Hes just a symbol for what they really support - racism, toxic masculinity, oppression, etc. They dont care about the reality of him, they are just using him as a mascot for their hate.

I don’t think this is it. I was explaining this to apolitical friends the other day. He’s a symbol of not having to care about or defer to anything outside of yourself and your family and friends (and in Trump’s case, not even that).
The idea of the Self-Sufficient Man is a mainstay of American culture from the days of the yeoman farmer, now updated to be adoration of the Successful Businessman. The gun as a symbol of self-sufficiency and a ward against the outside world (as opposed to violence per se) is also paramount here. The will of the individual must be supreme.
The reason so many attacks on Trump fail is that when he refuses to acknowledge them, it demonstrates again that he does not need to admit to any restraints. Hypocrisy, heresy, inaccuracy and inconsistency are all transformed into good things as long as Trump emerges from them unscathed. It’s like stories of a Hindu or Buddhist master levitating; they demonstrate their mastery by showing that natural laws don’t apply to them.
Stuff like racism or anti-immigrant or anti-trans bigotry is all defining the out-group about whom one does not have to care, but even out-group bigotry is a special case of not allowing anything to assault the inner sanctum.
