College Football 2024: Hail to the Cheaters

Not hating on Fisch for taking the money, but most college coaches are ridiculously overpaid. The elite few are arguable worth it, but most colleges are just overpaying hoping to get lucky. I don’t think there is much evidence guys like Fisch are a good bet. Probably more than half of them are fired before their massive contract expires.

Fisch also didn’t turn Arizona into a top 10-15 program. They had one good year. Their recruiting classes hadn’t become elite. College football is full of guys like him that have one great season, only to quickly fall back to mediocrity. Not saying he sucks and maybe it’s possible he’s some genius, but if it weren’t such a long term bet, I’d happily take even odds he doesn’t finish his 7-year contract at UW. Even guys with much longer track records of being a solid coach often don’t finish their contract when hired by programs that consider themselves elite (I’d make the same bet that DeBoer gets fired).

lol have fun in the Big 10 UCLA

I don’t really get the move. I feel like Chip found the exploit that worked 15 years ago, but after people caught up to playing against tempo he never really found the next adjustment.

The new new adjustment

Just pay 100,000,000 for your offense

Chip hates recruiting and, at least when he was at Oregon, pretty much was only involved with the offense. There was also a complaint from a booster that he didn’t spend enough time golfing with donors.

Surprised post-NFL he didn’t just become Saban’s OC.

Boosters are such fucking losers. I cannot imagine spending so much time, effort, and money so my school’s football team can buy the best teenagers. And I love my college teams.

Being pissed that a coach isn’t spending more time golfing with you? The fuck out of here.

College booster is a weird resume item. It’s really weird.

Step one is imagining that you have so much money that you don’t need to work and don’t really know what to do with it. Once you’re at that point, I don’t think it’s a big leap. Sure you could do philanthropy or something, but not everyone is wired that way.

When Chip took over as Oregon HC it had one major bowl win since 1920. They lost Rose Bowls in ‘58 and ‘95 and won the Fiesta Bowl in ‘01 (Rose Bowl was the natty that year).

Chip Kelly was at Oregon four years: Rose Bowl (L), Natty (L), Rose Bowl (W), Fiesta Bowl (W)

Whining about Rich Brooks not golfing enough with boosters when Oregon was a 3-win team in the early ‘80s would have been pathetic. Jack Roberts* was whining about Chip during Oregon’s greatest era by far when we were the #2 team nationally of that period.

*Former Oregon Labor Commissioner and failed gubernatorial candidate. Guess which party.

If I ever win a billy goat Megabucks Portland State is winning men’s and women’s basketball natties.

Ducks aren’t getting anything beyond whatever donation tickets require.

This got me thinking. Is there a point in time where one could place wagers on a team’s outcomes with a TP window still available?

Wow, I would have lost a lot of money betting it was longer than that.

I feel like it will happen eventually. His football legacy will outlive his pedophile coverup legacy.
