College Football 2024: Hail to THE Buckeyes

Maybe there is going to be a chance for an unofficial practice between schools to take place. Maybe during the first week of October. Like… a Tuesday. And the schools can “practice” against another school that is either in state or neighboring state.

Still got UK beating Auburn, because fuck it, lets go

@Needle what kind of plays should you be calling if your OL might be the worst in the country and your QB has no pocket presence?

Watching Louisiana (lf, AP#19) @ Georgia State (gas). Tied at 21 entering the 4th. I got this game on for Sabo the dog.

As the P12 & MW aren’t playing, Sabo and me considered picking ‘new’ favorites this season, in lieu of his Aztecs and my Golden Bears. We decided not to. However if we did… I would have picked the Tennessee Volunteers and Sabo would have picked the Georgia State Panthers.

Sabo enjoys going to colleges, but he’s never been to a FBS campus. I’ve promised to take him to Cal & SDSU. He has been to two FBS stadiums however… one active and one defunct. The defunct football venue is Oracle Park in San Francisco, where my Golden Bears played their home games in 2011.

The active FBS stadium he’s been to is Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta… home of the Panthers.

Can’t wait to tell the people in the camps about the time Syracuse won 10 games in a season. They won’t believe me.

He went when it was Turner Field for the Braves, right?

That is correct. We went to ~7th last Braves game there. The game was delayed by rain multiple times and finally called in the 7th.

The other cool thing was they kept the section of the wall where H.Arron hit his 715th HR in old Fulton County Stadium in the parking lot. Sabo got to walk around that shrine too. The plan was for GA State to incorporate it into their new baseball stadium.

Final right now: LA-Lafayette wins in OT.

I think I’ll just give up on this. When our resident leftist / worker’s rights members @Sabo and @PocketChads are full throatedly rooting on NCAAF, I’m clearly in the miniscule minority.

It’s a minority opinion among us radicals.

I gotta continually remind my union bros that maybe we don’t want to, say counter-program vs the World Series, if we really expect anyone the show up for our event. Our union hall was inaccessible when the old NFL team played home games… which was just a continuing mystery to them. Our acknowledged mentor always says his mentor always said “sports is why the revolution never happens”. I just SMH.

But we’re mostly ex-poker players here. Before we resurrected the SD GMB, I was active in the LA GMB. I’d usually do a session at the Gardens on the drive up, and often a session at the Bike afterwards. When we helped OR shut down four Schneider DCs in Riverside Co on F29… I did a session at Lake Elsinore on the drive up, and a session at Pechanga on the drive back.

When I get abuse, I ask them if they watch movies.

ETA: then again, I was a professional sports gambler for 10 years, co-founded one of the first ever fantasy baseball leagues, and ran a fantasy scoring service for a few years too.

A couple of things gave me pause.

Your anecdote of playing football. I had a distant family member who committed suicide because of CTE. I didn’t really know him but it was tragic. Guy had it all too.

Also don’t have the energy anymore when it seems that nuance doesn’t exist in these debates anymore. College football does a lot of good also even if I’m not sure the sum total is worth it. (Funding almost all the other sports which includes most of the women’s sports due to Title IX) I probably would’ve quit watching if they hadnt done something to reduce the head hunting and spearing. I was never a fan of those plays anyways.

I skateboarded for ~ 12 years. People get absolutely wrecked to entertain others. I’m not sure where to draw the line. Look at BMX; Are you familiar with Dave Mirra? He was the best all around BMX rider ever. (Can’t put him over Hoffman personally). Should we shun these sports?

I’ve also consumed a rather substantial amount of hallucinogenics in my day. Some peoples lives are literally ruined from this; sometimes even from just one experience. I would still argue they are a net positive for society.

But I probably haven’t thought about it as much as you have since you were directly involved.

Yea I don’t know. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it, as I suffered from depression and anxiety for over a decade and self medicated with booze for most of that time. It’s the combination of long term physical / mental health damage and lack of compensation that does it for me. The labor is being exploited much more so in this case than in the ones you mentioned.

Also, speaking from experience, young adults are not capable of making an informed and educated opinion on the long term risks they are taking by playing football.

Who would you say are the real winners? The TV networks?

Most schools lose or break even on football revenue.

Nick Saban and Dabo make nearly 10M a year.

ETA I don’t know the specifics, but it’s very American Capitalism to think there isn’t severe exploitation going on in re to the workforce. I saw this bit on Forbes

“ For years, the Texas Longhorns have been hailed as college football’s ultimate cash cow. In 2011, Texas was the first college football team ever to record $100 million in revenue. In 2014, the team generated more in profit – $92 million – than all but two teams made that year in revenue .

To give some serious answers…

  • Regarding CTE/etc: It does take a certain amount of “see no evil” to be a fan. I can’t deny that. But, as always me boycotting does nothing. The players want to play. So I’m kinda along for the ride, because I like the view.

I feel that there will be a tech fix here. Not the fools errand of making better gear to withstand hits… that just makes hits harder and the cycle repeats. I imagine instead something along these lines: unis stuffed full of acceleramators/etc such that when hit happens in an unsafe manner the uni goes on “tilt”. Which draws a flag y/o trip to the tent.

  • College players should organize, like duh. Also, the recent multi-sport wildcat strikes should point the way… instead of a separate MLB, NFL, FBS, etc/etc unions and unions for players only, there should be a Live Sports Industrial Union for all stadium/venue workers, on and off field, regardless of sport.

I don’t know if I want to comment on all of that stuff…but,

I have a hard time arguing against this. It’s getting worse daily and more heartbreaking daily. I’m really torn on the whole thing. We got denied a game on Friday that was agreed upon by two schools but due to the northern school traveling south or vice versa or finding a neutral location with other protocols…we were told flat out no. By both executives of their states.

Part of me was glad it got cancelled because exposure is exposure. The other part of me is terrified about student athletes playing games against teams that have been playing for a month+ before our team ever takes the field. It is extremely dangerous.

My Golden Bears haven’t gone to the Rose Bowl in my lifetime. The Rose experience (urban camping, parade, my Golden Bears in the game, stadium visit) has been on my ‘bucket list’ since before I knew what that meant. It’s a playoff season this time. If my Golden Bears are CFP #1-3 seeds they’ll play in this season’s game. Will I go?

LOL, of course not. They’ve already cancelled the parade anyways. Since it’s not at all unlikely that I’ll die before my Golden Bears play again in the game… I have a backup plan. I’m going to the 2024-1-1 game regardless.

Sabo the dog’s football Aztecs are back too!

Indy UMass is back too. If the MAC comes back as expected today, that’d make 127/130 programs playing this fall. The only holdouts being CUSA Old Dominion, and independents New Mexico State and UConn.

IDK if it’s prudent for the MAC to come back. But if they do take that decision… please, please, please give us some of that sweet mid-week MACtion.

ETA: The Mac is back… and Nov 4 is a Wednesday…
