Coffee Talk (and Tea)

looking for a WDT tool that 1) isn’t made by some chinese company with a bunch of random letters as a brand name 2) isn’t $75 and 3) is actually in stock. Seems like wine cork + sewing needles may be the way to go?

I’ve joined #TeamTeaCup btw. A++++++++++. Picked up a couple of noritake “legendary” crestwood platinum with saucers for $6 each on eBay.

Forget the cup. What is the deal with that keyboard?

Yeah Lance did a video on DIY tool I think using some acupuncture needles and cork.

So has one of you hot drink nerds tried salt in black tea yet? Verdict?

While getting takeout from Shang Artisan Noodle @Fatboy8 at the new Durango location I stumbled upon the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had.

The barista said you can encode the machine with your recipe. Coffee came out at drinking temperature and matched the tasting notes. Said they used to call busy service pourgatory because of all the manual pour overs they had to do but this thing changed everything.

reminder:

I’m probably averaging 8 weeks of rest on most light roasts.

I’ve heard about these but never had a cup from one. looks pretty neat

A couple months ago I ordered some bags online, then bought a couple emergency bags locally cause my shipment got rerouted and delayed, then bought another couple bags online thanks to LM’s rec a while back, then my partner’s friend shipped her 4 bags from a different local source cause she said we were getting into coffee, only dark roasts for her but light roasts for me, but the friend keyed in on the light roast preference so that was everything we got. I believe that puts me up to 6x 12 oz bags, one 2 lb bag, and a couple 4 oz sample packs. I’ll drink her dark roasts if we’re drinking together, only drink my light roasts solo about 1-2x/week at around 20g per. I’m really going to be testing the limits of this off-gassing theory.

Don’t put 'em in the microwave unless you’re looking for a thrill!

I haven’t bought coffee in months and don’t even look forward to doing research to find something right now. Most of these roasters are bullshit. Selling mediocre (for the specialty category) for top quintile prices. So the game as the buyer is to hunt for deals which is exhausting given how many options exist. I’ve had better luck lately buying from roasters that don’t have a big name / national following which just seems like a ticket to charge any price they want.

My local high brow coffee roaster/shop that I think requires you to have a Mac if you’re going to do any work there has this and they make a great cup.

ETA: whoops, I’m pretty sure they have an automatic pour over machine, but not one that can be programmed to your specific taste.

Here’s a deal. This Costa Rica red catuai microlot was one of the best coffees I bought in 2023 and (surprisingly) they still have it. They’re doing a BOGO 50% with code VALENTINE and it works on multiple bags. Free ship at $35. I’m in for a fairly big order of this and some of their other black bag limited releases.

looking for a new carafe. Currently I am using the Hario 01 sized glass carafe:

This is fine, I brew straight into it from the V60, I almost always brew 15 g, usually I don’t use more than 17x (255g) water, so this is no problem size-wise. The issue is that now that I’m on #TeamTeaCup, I am only pouring part of the brew and what’s left in the carafe cools too quickly, so I’m looking for something insulated or at least double-walled. I have the insulated 03 sized hario server, and it’s great (my wife uses this every day, she basically fills it up with aeropress brew and it keeps it warm long enough for her. There is an 02 sized insulated hario, but it’s still quite large and really I’d like something as small as possible (also the hario lid is really hard to get apart to properly clean, but that’s a separate problem)

I’m using basically the same setup but haven’t run into the problem of it cooling too fast. I wonder if a Chemex cozy would fit on the Hario 01 / 400 mL?

Tried the Costa Rica Black Diamond first and it’s wild. Reminds me of the some crazier pink and orange bourbons I’ve had. Dry grind aroma was bonkers. Not sure I can describe it after one cup but maybe fruit punch? Looks like that is sold out now but they still have three other limited release black bags.

I think the solution is “drink the coffee faster”

Also regarding the OG filters they stopped making them almost two years ago so any you’ll find are probably marked up. I ordered a case and am down to just two boxes now. The Cafec Abaca (not the Abaca+) was quite good from what I remember; the Abaca PLUS claims to be faster but it’s not. Not sure about Sibarist other than it drains crazy fast which means you’ll grind to espresso for a lot of coffees. Rogue Wave is my current go to for big filter reloads because they stock everything including the weird ones that nobody has.
