Climate Change and the Environment

Tipping point nearing in the Amazon: https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/top-scientists-warn-of-an-amazon-tipping-point/2019/12/20/9c9be954-233e-11ea-bed5-880264cc91a9_story.html

Breaks my heart and makes me incredibly angry at the same time. And this is the point in time where the peoples of the world elect your Trumps, Johnsons and Bolsonaros. WAAF indeed.

I have a friend whose company I really enjoy but who entered the conspiracy theory rabbit hole a few years ago and he drives me nuts.

His line over beers a few days ago was “Why should I listen to a 16 year old girl?”

arrggghhhh!!

Straya is legit on fire atm. This is downtown Adelaide this morning. I live about 5-10 min drive from where this is taken. It stinks of smoke outside.

There are fires in the Adelaide Hills that have been burning a few days. An acquaintance of mine who I used to play poker home games with had a wine label that he built up from scratch. He lost everything. House, vineyards, winery. A number of wine growers sustained severe damage.

It’s not even January yet, this is right at the start of peak fire danger season. It’s going to be a long summer.

I think one of the most disturbing things si how early the fires have started this year. This in combination with threats of fires in places that traditionally have not had to worry about them and you have a nightmare situation.

The silver lining here is that the fires will kill a lot of the poisonous animals.

Forgot to take pictures in Sydney when it was at its worse. Air quality is still crap and it is going to get worse again with no end in sight. Just hope those volunteer firemen get a break because they must be getting exhausted and that is a recipe for more casualties.

I met a guy this morning that will probably lead to my second solar job due to rebuilding something burned down in wildfires.

Mad Max apocalypse coming to Australia sooner than expected.

One potential upside to this is that since it’s happening to a white country, that might actually spark concern action here in the US to take the climate seriously.

Sorry NZ, our bad.

That’s not even working in the actual country on fire.

Parliament House, Canberra.

Canberra has the worst air quality on the planet today, beating out Delhi, India. Air quality station there recorded levels 20 times above those considered hazardous.

Edit: Just gonna repeat that we are either not yet in peak bushfire season or barely into it, depending on what measure you use. The disastrous Black Saturday bushfires a decade ago, in which 173 people died, 2,000+ homes were lost and entire towns were wiped off the map, happened on February 7. January-February are typically the dates for bad bushfires.

I liked this not because I actually like the photo, obv, but just because it’s a very powerful image.

These bushfires are getting some coverage over here in USA#1, but not enough to spark (no pun intended) any sort of movement.

The luxury Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, South Australia was recently named the top resort in Australia.

I imagine you can get some outrageously cheap deals there now.
