I think anything that encourages more women to keep playing to try to become titled players is a positive for chess, and many WGMs go on to get their IM, and they can just skip the women’s titles and go for IM/GM if they want. But perhaps there are some women who stop after getting their wgm who might otherwise keep going to try to get IM
What’s the deal with Levon? In his interview Fabi said [spoiler from today’s results] he’s asked whether he played for a draw from the start for strategic reasons, and he answered something like, today’s a big day for Levon, and I didn’t think it would be right to play this game, but it did work out in terms of tournament strategy as well.
I was concerned about Alice Lee at the beginning but she settled down, showing less visible anxiety as the tournament went on. She stumbled a bit at the end but still managed a good result. Actually it was a little funny, there was one break where they showed a wide shot of several of the games and almost all the women were nervously tapping their feet or otherwise fidgeting, just not where their opponents could see.
The sound is bad but otherwise a fun discussion of tomorrow’s women’s playoff. I think poor Tatev got bullied into changing her view from Irina being a heavy favorite to giving Jennifer a small edge. When I say fun I mean in the chess nerd sense ofc.
Oh, uh, by the way, I’ll be playing some, uh, chess matches at, uh, Mohegan Sun Friday (Oct. 21, 2022) through Sunday (Oct. 23, 2022). Hope not to see you all there.
It seems like that’s what it is. Also Aronian is 40 years old and his (new) partner is 23, so we have to bestow upon him the Leonardo DiCaprio award of excellence.
23 is surely old enough for him not to be accused of whatever it is he’s being accused of. Plenty of women have finished degrees and have careers or started a family by that age.
