I don’t mind Caruana saying that. It’s true. Both Nepo’s blunders were blunders that any GM should not make. Gotta be honest about that. Nepo said the same thing himself.
Was a bit disappointed to see a Petrov in game 10. Like yeah, I know, he has the black pieces against Magnus. But he has to win with Black at some point if he’s going to make a comeback.
Was disappointed not to see him play c5 in particular.
Nepo sucks and has always sucked, he played well to get here in the candidates, but … these results were predictable. Like a 60 year old Anand would have been doing better.
I was so convinced after Game 5 that Nepo was going to win that I was bummed at being unable to bet at the one site that had the line for the match. I thought that Nepo at +350 to win in regulation was a solid bet.
I don’t know about that. If Nepo makes it to game 12, that’s better than Anand did the first time. Magnus beat Anand with 2 games to spare, but that was only a 12 game series.
Not throwing shade on Caruana, was just saying that Giri wasn’t dishing out the worst criticism.
Yeah the reality is it is very difficult to force the issue in any opening against a White player who wants a draw. Nepo has played the French when he needs to win before, but the Exchange French is virtually drawn right off the bat. That said, there has to be a better choice than a Petrov.
Yeah saying Nepo sucks is a real overreaction. He’s a top 10 player at a time when players have never been better. He’s having a collapse here but guess what, trying to play the greatest player of all time on the biggest stage in chess is very stressful.
There’s only one player that could definitely beat Magnus and that’s the player that Giri imagines himself to be in his own mind.
It says “Ian, if you win, I’ll be your queen for a whole night.”.
I mean, if you’re going with that motif, “If you win, I’ll give you a better ride than one of your horses” would have probably been more to the point.

They are called horses in Russian, and bishops are really, actually called elephants.
“Queen” is a colloquial/kiddie term though, it’s a bit like calling a knight a horse in English. In Russian it’s called “ferz’”, which according to Wikipedia is a word of Persian origin.
I don’t think “ride” would work as a double entendre in Russian though, so the joke wouldn’t really work anyway.
Well, in that case, I’d agree your version is way better.
The bishop thing is interesting. In other parts of the world it’s the rooks that are called elephants.

Between elephants, horses that ride differently, and a ferz, I’m not sure what other chess allusion she could come up with to motivate Nepo.
i’ve never played any level lower than 5 mins. any pointers on how to get better at 3|2? is it harder on your phone vs computer?
3/2 and 5 are often about the same - the +2 makes a big difference if you can gain time by rattling the opening off quickly.
I find playing on a phone much harder (small iPhone screen), but an iPad is imo better than using a laptop.
