3rd game I fell for one of those stupid traps that let my opponent snag an early rook but once it was over he didn’t know what he was doing and I eventually mated him in a position where I was way down material but hit him with a sequence of moves I wasn’t even sure were good until I saw it unfold.
My advice is just play as much as possible. Don’t worry about puzzles. Just keep playing and all sorts of patterns will just make sense…a lot more sense than if you see it in a puzzle.
Puzzles have a role, but I think when you’re starting out, playing as much as you can (and analyzing after) is the best way to develop your game as quickly as possible.
I also recommend starting with longer time limits. You need time to think things through. If you’re playing with other beginner humans, then untimed is the way to go. If online, I’d say starting with 30min a side is better. Starting with short time limits (e.g. <10 min) is terrible for beginners imo. You don’t need to be dealing with time pressure at this stage.
Thanks. Yeah I’ve been playing with 10 minute timers. It’s probably all I’ll realistically have time for. My brain is somewhat naturally wired to make quick decisions so I think the somewhat faster time limit is a bit better for me. I’m somewhat surprised how quickly I burn through my 10 minutes though. I’m definitely a slower player than my opponents at this point, and I was worried my problem would be rushing moves.
Honestly, I just play daily chess and screw timers being a thing entirely.
dr. lupo after losing a queen blatantly cheated in pogchamps
surprised that didn’t happen earlier in pogchamps really
Since I’m now retired and living across the street from a chess club, I put in my application to recertify as a tournament director…after a 40 year hiatus!
I’d be surprised if I didn’t just break a record.
Yeah good call on daily being the way to go. I haven’t had as much time to play but having 3 or 4 daily games going at once has helped scratch that itch. I’ve been taking a lot more time per move than I would’ve expected.
How can this be his first ever loss? What does that mean? Can’t be literal right?
to gukesh in classical it is, though it wouldn’t be that many matchups
obviously not first ever loss
Oh that makes more sense.
Play long time controls and do puzzles and review your games imo.
In classical OTB play, Magnus had a pretty insane record including a 125 game unbeaten streak.
god fucking damnit I just recreated the FEN.
I’m working on something really cool I’ll be ready to show you nerds in a few months and will need alpha testers if you’re down I’ll update then
What?
What does it improve over FEN?
Fun chess factoid about me:
If we include non-tournament games, I can trace my chess lineage back to Harry Nelson Pillsbury, winner of the historic Hastings 1895 tournament, through only three intermediary players:
- In 1977, I played Victor Korchnoi in a simul in NYC at the Manhattan Chess Club.
- In the 1960s, Korchnoi played numerous games against Bent Larson.
- In 1954, Bent Larson played 72-year-old Ossip Bernstein at the Amsterdam Olympiad.
- In 1902, Bernstein played and lost to Pillsbury during one of Pillsbury’s blindfold simuls.
The kevin bacon of chess. Everybody within 4 players of drchesspain, (okay morphy might be 5, as steinitz ducked morphy but I ain’t looking it up)
