She was on shows going back to the 60s.

Cool I never knew this. The oldest thing I could recall her in was Young Frankenstein

Indigenous rights have been Canada’s greatest shame for as long as I can remember, and until Murray Sinclair led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission the issue was largely absent from public discourse here. It’s been less than a decade since he finished that work, and Canada has changed from a country where we swept all that unpleasantness under the rug and cheered on the hockey team, to a country where training on indigenous rights is standard in the workplace. The work has barely begun on even trying to right as many of the wrongs as we can, but without Murray Sinclair literally millions of Canadians would remain as thoroughly ignorant of the issue as we were just 10 years ago. It’s a sad day for Canada that he’s gone, we can only hope that he inspired a thousand more just like him. I think he probably did.

How relatively bad was Canada vs US in treatment of native populations?

Serious. I do not know.

most natives fought on the side of the British during the war of 1812 so quite a bit better I would assume. There were still a lot of atrocities though.

We’re no better than the U.S. was. Hell, if you look at how we continue to treat the Indigenous population now, you could probably say we’re worse. Look up Starlight Tours for just one horrific example.

If Canada was worse than us, it had to have only been by a degree. Hitler supposedly drew inspiration for concentration camps from our reservations. We had a state-sanctioned program that removed native children from their families and relocated them.

But Canada is very apologetic about it.

So did we, and ours was still running until 1996.

Our Supreme Court is trying to overturn the laws that supposedly ended our program.

We gave out casinos here. Not sure if that’s a plus or minus.

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times. Great human. Sad day.

Better than the US, but still very bad.

I don’t think this is correct. We are very bad now and were then but almost all historians and current indigenous studies people would say we are doing better than the US I think. Not tons, but better.

I mean we had truth and reconciliation for one.
