This one hurts. Skydiving is a sport where one frequently not just meets, but befriends their heroes, and he was no exception. I feel so privileged to have known him.

This is probably a dumb question, but does skydiving have any contemporary military purpose? When is the last time we needed people to jump out of planes with parachutes?

It’s a pretty legit way to get behind enemy lines

Air Force Special Ops (both types) are designed around it.

CCT units go in and secure airfields behind enemy lines. Hence the slogan “First There.”

The US Army also has one of it’s dozen or so divisions dedicated to parachute drops, which involves a lot more soldiers than a special forces team. There was at least one parachute drop during the Iraq invasion.
