A lot of these people are facing more dangerous situations where they come from. This just seems like a terrible thing to say as well as wrong. What do you know about their parents and the options they had for their children?
Well, to be fair, neither of us know anything about any specific case. I would say that, generally speaking, if the conditions were truly perilous—granting your assessment as true—than the parents should have accompanied the children and/or made plans for their safe travel (with another adult or trusted friend).
I personally wish the law was otherwise, and that the border permitted friends/family to plan for conveyance of children to the US safely. Everyone knows that’s not reality; denying it doesn’t make one’s actions reasonable.
It’s a matter of who has the right to make the decisions for these children and under what circumstance the police can seize possession of them. I would allow these parents to decide what to do for their children until it’s clear that they made bad and dangerous decisions for them, of course considering the options they had available. I’d give them the same rights that I’d give to JohnnyTruant’s family who sent their 6 year old across the border.
Perhaps they are deciding that being in custody in the US is preferable to staying where they are. I’m sure, on the whole, the parents love their children, understand the circumstances, and are doing the best they can for them.
It’s not the reality because Biden and his administration are fucking assholes who kidnap people.
Knowing little about the context of this, and what arrangement were made ex ante, it is difficult to draw any equivalence.
Of course, just because “it worked out” does not excuse neglect.
The police had no idea what arrangements Johnny’s parents made.
You would suggest Biden order his officials not to enforce the law? At the same time the filibuster is a matter of debate? Seems unreasonable.
“It’s the laaaaaw!” holds a lot less weight when you’re the damn president.
Game this out. Police observe young child alone and crossing border. Police ask child “where are your parents”? Child says “I don’t know, I’m lost”. Police take child into their care until they can ensure the child is safe. What the hell else should they do?
I’m saying that every person involved is kidnapping innocent people. I think more people should be saying that. I think if more people were saying that instead of it’s a political process up for negotiation, it would be better.
I’m just glad Trump wasn’t informed he could detain everyone who voted for Hillary.
That’s fair. I disagree on the messaging, but agree on the ends.
Why are you making this the story again? Like I’ve said a wandering 5 year old is different, but that’s the exception, not the rule. A wandering 5 year old alone in any town will be picked up by the police.
You referenced Johnny’s story. My point was that there were likely reasonable accommodations made ex ante.
Also, even a 12-17 year old child wandering through dangerous terrain is still at unreasonable risk of harm.
“Reasonableness” is fucking cancer.
Neglect, you mean.
