If you want to know what he thinks, giving him an open-ended request to defend his views is not going to be fruitful. I don’t think he’s someone who has thought about politics on the level of giving you a well-constructed paragraph. Which doesn’t mean he’s stupid or inarticulate. He’s just not someone who spends as much time on the subject as we do. Less than 1% of Americans think about politics that much.
You are better off using something like the Socratic method to tease out his views one sentence at a time.

in all seriousness here, i have suggested numerous times over the last year or two that he get help from a professional, he has insurance and could easily afford it. I have seen a therapist in the last couple years and have been open here and in my personal life about it and how it helped me. I think he thinks its a sign of weakness.
In all seriousness, I think he could potentially benefit greatly from professional help.
Hopefully he reaches that realization on his own.
