Breaking up with Twitter

A thread to discuss alternate social media platforms like Mastodon, Hive, Bluesky, Cohost, Post, Nostr, etc.

Are we at a point yet where I (certified Twitter addict) should be joining Mastodon (or some other Twitter replacement)? If so, what server?

yes
it doesn’t matter

btw there are tools to help you get started on mastadon

if you want to get into the details of account settings etc (probably just for real nerds) How to Make a Mastodon Account and Join the Fediverse | Electronic Frontier Foundation

if you want someone to tell you which server to join: https://instances.social/

this thing will look at your twitter account and find people who follow you and who you follow that have posted their mastodon handles and give you a csv file that you can easily import into your mastodon server: https://fedifinder.glitch.me/

once you’ve followed a bunch of people this tool will look at everyone you follow and who they follow and recommend accounts you aren’t yet following https://followgraph.vercel.app/

Probably time for a dedicated thread for Mastodon and other Twitter alternatives.

2023 will be the Year of Mastodon

Not being able to search on Mastodon seems like a huge leak.

I got a mastodon and post account early on but haven’t been back since setting them up. What are the feelings now?

I don’t really tweet, I just read, mostly sports and politics. Without people posting or pooing or whatever they call writing posts I don’t have a strong desire to go there. I would leave twitter in a second if the content creators I follow started using one. Wouldn’t have to be all, just a movement that would make it worth my time.

Post sucks.

Mastodon doesn’t have quite enough content to hit critical mass though it is getting close imo. More journalists are posting there every day Even though a bunch are grumpy about it.

In my technical field there is now more discourse in the fediverse than on Twitter, and there has been for a couple of weeks.

yeah this kinda sucks, hashtags actually matter on mastodon
