Boomers, Generational Wealth, and Inequality

And yet since that year they, as a group, have been morally repugnant. I’m not sure what Canadian Boomers are like, but US Boomers… dude they are something special.

Being a bigot is a lot less interesting than you seem to think.

OK Boomer. Holding a group accountable for their collective actions is being a bigot now. Good to know.

Actually you know what? I’ll take ‘bigoted against Boomers’ as an undertitle.

And what better way to do that than tarring all people born between 1945 and 1968!

(I couldn’t be arsed to look up the end of boomers, so apologies if I got the year wrong and I have insulted some beautiful people by calling them Boomers.)

I’m arguing we stick to our supposed moral and scientific beliefs. If it’s wrong to be racist or homophobic, I don’t see how ageist is any different.

If we flipped over to a right wing forum we would see a ton on “all black people are criminals” or “ all gays are pedophiles” arguments.

Hopefully, we are beyond this level of thinking.

Come on… white people born in the US between those years have a shit record and contributed very few awesome people. And the entire deck is stacked in their favor and the rest of us have to sit here and watch them enjoy it.

This is a really bad hill you are dying on man. Anyway, I have sworn off long political battles. Maybe chill and rethink the ramifications of what you are saying.

The difference is that I’m punching up and there’s nothing the Boomers love more than punching down. They’re literally the super spreaders of both the examples you used.

Current old people keep voting to hurt me and I’m supposed to just turn the other cheek? What are you a deist?

I don’t get mad at black people for being bigoted against white people if that’s what helps them get through the day. Even though I’m actively trying to push the boulder of white supremacy off of them I totally understand that I can’t even begin to understand what they are going through and don’t expect them to be polite to me a white dude about it.

I’m sorry man but I’m a millenial with a large student loan who is going to turn 36 before he owns a home. I get to be a bit resentful towards the Boomers lol.

I tend to agree, but I think a difference is that many, say, racist attitudes tend to be based on pure assumptions about inferiority of races. Here we’re saying that boomers were born then raised in a particular period of history that contributed to the way they are - because of what they were told, how they were raised, etc. IMO its pretty legit to point out that there are serious problems with the culture in which they were raised, and its hard to separate that from the people they are.

For whatever it’s worth every time I hear it I’m just more sympathetic to Boomers as a whole.

This otherization of a group undermines the idea that life doesn’t have to be a zero sum game.

It also legitimizes some of the insane fanfic that places like Fox pedal.

This right here is the point. I am totally down to forgive as many of them individually as anyone wants. I get how they happened. But that doesn’t mean we can let them off the hook collectively, because what they’ve done has to be learned from.

Unfortunately when you try to learn from the Boomer experience it’s mostly a loooooooooong (like ten thousand entries long) list of what not to do.

And on a cultural level there needs to be a resounding rejection of almost all of boomer culture and thought process. In particular indefinite optimism, greed is good, selfishness is good, and short term thinking is good all must go and go with great velocity. That shit is poison.

A key failure of Gen-X so far was not mounting any substantial protest movement against the W-era Forever Wars. That and we really like Harry Potter for some dumbfuck reason.

I’m guessing voter turnout is a pretty big leak.

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you, they’re not sending you. They’re sending people who have lots of problems and they’re bringing their problems with us. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.

This argument doesn’t even work at all. Undocumented immigrants are way less likely to commit crimes then most Americans.

The man who said that literally personifies everything wrong with Boomers. He’s like the physical manifestation of the demons of an entire generation. They voted for him by a pretty wide margin too. Many of them are so hateful that they didn’t show up in 2016 but did in 2020 because they enthusiastically wanted a second helping.

Indefinite optimism: “And some day, like magic it will just go away”
Greed is good: LOL
Selfishness is good: Double LOL
Short term thinking: Let’s gut the CDC pandemic response team for peanuts so that we don’t have to pay people to ‘stand around’

Stormfront or Unstuck?

At one point you did say you were switching to the GOP if Trump was reelected.

No patron but you’re one of my favorite posters on the board. Just watching my old man in the waning days of “beating” pancreatic cancer and seeing him reduced…I have to speak up.

I mean if they could win with Trump the Democrats were a lost cause. Might as well join the only party that can actually get things done if you want to get things done. That was an expression of rage and despair more than anything.

Harry Potter is a pretty toxic universe if you think about it.
