When I started in the workforce (so 20+ years ago now) they literally told us “we can’t tell you not to do it but don’t do it”, in those exact words.

The training is a lot better now. We have annual conduct training that covers this stuff and it is much more realistic and specific about the kinds of scenarios that I’m sure pop up all them time.

It’s a common misconception that they’re there to oversee fair play, as umpires in a tennis match.

The title of the department really says it all. ‘Human Resources’. You don’t have to be a rocket surgeon to know that the way corporations utilize resources is to extract the max, spend the minimum, and keep the difference.

HR is there to protect the employees management perceives as structurally important (nearly always to include management ldo) and minimize legal costs associated with protecting those employees. If you aren’t important HR will cut you loose at the first whiff of trouble, and if you are important they’ll cover up actual crimes you’ve committed. If retaining you is a priority HR will take your complaints and overall happiness very seriously indeed and if retaining you isn’t a priority they’ll figure out how to steal your wages.

Yeah HR isn’t on your side at all lol.

At my firm (and similar firms, I believe) it’s referred to as “Talent” now, a rebranding most likely in response to this exact issue.

Any idea what was going on with the HR in my company? They straight up ignored my manager who had to beg them for months to be able to hold dead beats accountable, which again was hurting the company.

They also protected a supervisor who legit did NOTHING for 2 years. Like was out smoking in his car for over an hour a day, on his phone all day, and delegated his legit tasks to regular workers. Not stuff he should delegate, like actual supervisor work. Tons of complaints against him from the manager and employees.

Also someone who missed insane amounts of work. Pretty sure even the senior VP complained about this supervisor a few times.

They are being judged on retention (high retention always good) and on the company not getting sued. Sounds like busted incentives to me, but that’s usually the root cause of this kind of nonsensical behavior.

Source: Am in sales and have seen many, many, many busted incentives plans and the totally idiotic behavior those incentive plans generated.

There are literally zero incentives here AFAIK. If by incentives you mean bonuses and the like for good work?

But yeah retention is pretty bad so that makes sense.

There were dozens of employees with horrible attendance issues who had zero action taken. HR literally said managers and supervisors couldn’t do write ups, instead they had to do more training.

Took a ton of complaining and the super high up bosses seeing us fail horribly meeting our goals because of attendance before they finally changed this and allowed write ups and holding people accountable.

Haha pretty much. We also have internal folks whose job it is to make sure everyone is working on a project at all times. They used to be called Resource Managers, again making it clear, until they recently rebranded as Deployment Specialists.

‘Massive’ is relative to the value of the employee. This guy is the founder of the company and the 4th richest person on Earth. HR doesn’t give a fuck about him creating a sexual harassment lawsuit for them to settle. They’ll settle it quickly and quietly and then shut the fuck up about it forever.

Perhaps the strangest thing to me about the era from when sexual harassment became a thing and the present day is just how little those supposedly ruinous sexual harassment lawsuits did to slow down the predations of upper management in basically every industry. If anything the option to just cash out some subordinates career and make them sign an NDA just put a dollar cost figure on every piece of bad behavior.

Never ever forget that ‘punishable by a fine’ actually means ‘legal for rich people’. This absolutely includes pressuring a subordinate into a solidly non-consensual sexual relationship.

True but these aren’t meaningless government level fines. I see sexual harrassment lawsuits hitting massive, massive numbers. Didn’t Bill O’Reily have to pay 30 million?

That’s not like these companies making 2 billion off an illegal policy and having to pay 3 million in fines.

They basically have to pay for the women they harass to be set up for life

I gotta be honest there are very few work environments as toxic as the ones where nobody gets fired ever. What happens in that environment is that everybody good quits, because who wants to do 3-4x jobs worth of work in exchange for normal money… and the trash lingers forever ruining everyone else’s quality of life and dragging the organization down.

I’m pretty far to the left, but on the subject of job security I’m really not. I think any restriction on firing people for work product related reasons is the actual line you should never cross. Obviously if it’s a temporary thing it’s not a big deal (stuff happens to people) but anyone who has ever had a garbage coworker knows that what they are doing isn’t OK.

I think a lot of the problems in education and policing could be solved with a shitload more accountability and a shitload less job security. Teaching should also pay more, and policing should pay what it currently pays without having to work 20 hours of OT a week. Those jobs should be awesome positions that are very competitive and only being very good should make it possible to stay in them.

Yeah it was brutal for like a year and a few decent people did leave. Lots were on the verge, but there were a lot of benefits to the company. Basically they were super lax on if you wanted to chill and talk for a bit as long as you got your job done and if you needed a day you could take it ( obviously lol )

I mostly agree on accountability being important. I think you should need a good reason to fire someone, but someone doing absolute jack shit all day and missing constantly with no actual excuse should be one. I’ve heard this is one legit major drawbacks of unions. Pretty sure that could be fixed though.
