They don’t need to be more like republicans in policy. People like their policies. They need to be more like republicans in presentation.
I think they also need to get over themselves a bit and be willing to deliver policy in a “crass” in your face way. When people express clearly that they are worried about the cost of living and they are viscerally angry about price inflation, “good” policy is to enact a technocratic set of controls that cleverly manage inflation and then you can generate a bunch of Excel charts showing that inflation is under control. But that policy gets you no credit from voters.
Another blunt way to deal with the issue is to do all of that AND do a stimulus package that sends Biden Bucks checks right to every American household to help them with their bills. Of course that is “bad” policy because flooding the economy with money goes against the goal of getting inflation under control. All the technocratic advisos will say “don’t do that, that’s a bad idea”. But a simple wealth transfer, Biden Bucks for Joe SIx Pack, is the kind of thing that people remember FOREVER and assign a ton of weight to. At least he did something for us!
The technocratically correct policy is not the “right” policy when you destroy democracy by implementing it. But the Dems as they were for the last several year could never bring themselves to “lower” themselves to that kind of level. They think that’s a strength but it’s actually an exploitable weakness.
Biden term almost over and there are still prisoners at Guantanamo who have been held for more than two decades without charges or trials.
