and here they are against each other. I voted Oh well, but kills me to see them against each other so early

Round 2 Match 11
(This is controversial, if I’d noticed it when I set the bracket I probably would have split them but I think it’s too late now most of the round is done. Live by the random number, die by the random number, that’s what I say. I just wish I wasn’t on record as a The National skeptic.)
The National - Fake Empire
Vs
The National - Murder Me Rachael
@mysteryconman got rewarded by @anon29622970 for Fake Empire in the ‘2000-09 Indie’ category. It then won in Group 1.
Wow do I just completely love this song! Literally probably my favorite song from this era not by a band I originally posted for my examples. I don’t think it’s possible to listen to this song and not feel completely transported in time.
@skydiver8 won for Murder me Rachael when @Jalfrezi wanted songs featuring some woman’s name. It then got runner up in Group 13.
For those who don’t know (which included me), they’re an indie rock band from skydiver’s Cincinati and they do a very decent job here of channelling their inner John Cale with the sort of dissonant electronic noise that I’m a sucker for (well spotted skydiver) as the murder-to-be becomes clearer.
There was enough in the music and lyrics for me to want several extra listens before ranking it, as is usually the case with these category winners.
Round 2 Match 12
The 100 Knights Orchestra - Soul Fugue
Vs
Rizzle Kicks - Down with the Trumpets
I won with Soul Fugue in a @ChrisV round in which we could submit anything. It then won Group 10.
This is such a cool track. Swings hard, big depth to the sound, but never sounds gratuitous. I liked it more every time I heard it. Unique sound, a really good fit for the category imo, and a deserving winner.
@SwankyWilder and Down With the Trumpets showed @eyebooger why where he lives has the best music. It then came second in Group 16.
Inebriated: Pretty sure I saw Rizzle Kicks on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Don’t think I know anything else about them. Not normally a hip-hop person, but this is pretty solid. It’s like hip-hop melded with dance friendly pop. This could work. Last song I’m listening to tonight, so that could be the reason I’m bobbing my head. Or maybe the song is legit good. I’ll find out later this weekend.
Ebriated: Loving this. Best use of trumpets in hip-hop since US3’s “Cantaloop”. Catchy chorus, cool beat, fun lyrics. Stiff competition, but this could actually win this thing.
Round 2 Match 13 (of 16)
Michael Kiwanuka - You Ain’t the Problem
Vs
Vive La Fete - Noir Desir
@MimosaDef romped to victory with You Ain’t the Problem in @cassette’s 2019-20 songs round. it then won Group 5.
Wow. This is great. Those last 20 seconds feel odd. Not quite sure why the song ends the way it does, but otherwise a really phenomenal track. Thanks very much for this. I love it.
@Pauwl won @seities’ songs containing a Scream round with Noir Desir. It then came runner up in Group 4.
I really enjoy everything about this. The beat, the vocals, the electronic twinkles weaving through the sound. As the track goes on it adds in changes of pace and becomes increasing frantic. The music fades out to a heartbeat, then comes back in and ascends around an increasingly dominant scream, finally closing out in a raw and devastating way, marking the end of the descent. This had me captivated from start to finish.
Round 2 Match 14 (of 16)
Anna Meredith - Inhale / Exhale
Vs
Run The Jewels - Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1
I impressed @Jalfrezi with Inhale / Exhale, a song in a style I don’t normally go for. It won Group 15.
This track successfully blends some experimentation and conventional pop in a way not totally dissimilar to how Roxy did in their day, and I like it a lot. She has real musical talent and imagination and I’ll check out her other stuff.
@DodgerIrish pumped up @cassette to dangerous levels with Blockbuster Night, being the best hit the gym / get pumped up song. It then came second in Group 10.
Killer Mike is a beast. Sick production. Run the Jewels don’t resonate with me most of the time, but this is great and has a nice tempo for a long run. Added to my gym playlist.
Matches 10 - 14 are currently ongoing.
10 has been tied for a while now. If any are tied when the round is scheduled to end (Friday morning) then I will use random powers to decide (unless anyone has a better solution).
Well, Match 10 managed to pick up one vote for either song so is still tied. Nonetheless some other CHAMPIONS emerged.

Round 2 Match 15 (of 16)
Aphex Twin - Digeridoo
Vs
Charles Bradley - Strictly Reserved For You
@suzzer99 and Digeridoo triumphed in a @LouisCyphre category about songs with some some ‘traditional’ or folk music element. It then won Group 9.
Imagine my surprise that this is actually very good. I don’t even know how to describe what’s going on there. All I know is that it’s fast and in a good way. My body just starts moving when I hear this.
@Pauwl gave me and Strictly Reserved for You a win in a round about positive love songs. It then runnered up in Group
5.
I know this is recent but it has that 70’s sound. Really cool. This is that kinda soul music I need to listen to more. This is a proper love song. Maybe this should win it all. Fuck it, this is a banger!.
Round 2 Match 16 (of 16)
Ruby Freidman Orchestra - You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive
Vs
Mariah Carey - Emotions
@Pauwl won @mjiggy’s Soundtrack category with You’ll Never Leave… It then won Group 3.
I guess that leaves Pauwl alone on the podium with the one certified banger that was submitted to this category. Wire to wire winner, I’ll let the song speak for itself because I’m off to go listen to it again myself.
@R.C. and Emotions triumphed in a round about female vocals thanks to @anon29622970. It then came second in Group 14.
This is how you showcase the vocal capabilities of an artist in a pop song! Perfect submission for this category.
Glad to see 90’s Mariah Carey getting beaten. God I hate the 90s.
More Triumphs to hail. Only Matches 15 + 16 still oustanding above.
Fleetwood Mac
Mickey Kiwanuka
Run the Jewels
cowards.
I would have voted Emotions over a bunch of the songs that actually advanced but it’s up again at a really good entry, one that I still listen to on the regular.
OK, round 2 in the books. Last two SUPER CHAMPIONES are:
Charles Bradley
Ruby Freidman Orchestra
I’ll likely kick Round 3 off on Monday.
Have to give a nod at this stage to @SwankyWilder, who submitted no less than a quarter of all the songs left. Not bad.
So all set for my traditional second place …
