Sadly, that’s exactly what I fear.
Just give 2k/month to everyone. That’s 6T/year and less than we will end up spending anyway.
I think most of us here are in agreement on this and have been since early March. Unfortunately in USA#1 in reality that’s impossible.
The business liability shield will cost far more lives than no new stimulus. Compromising on that would be a disaster.
When the dems won back the house in 2018 most of us were screaming for anybody other than Pelosi to be named Speaker. It’s moments like this that make it so clear why we wanted that. Imagine having a competent politician/negotiator at the helm and not having to sweat the washingtom generals cave in.
Also, Dems will unfortunately be blamed for blocking a stimulus package of no agreement is made. Reps are just so much better at messaging. Another reason why having a competent leader who can direct the correct messaging would be super valuable right now.
I think framing the negotiations as WE WILL MAKE A DEAL SOON NO MATTER WHAT is really dumb by Nancy. Then when it falls apart the Dems unfairly get the blame. She should have been hammering home that the Dems have already passed legislation to help the American people and the Republicans won’t even bring it up for a vote. Continually going hat in hand to the WH to “negotiate” just needlessly gives the Republican shenanigans credibility.
Find me someone who supported Seth Moulton or Tim Ryan.
I wonder if the Karen Bass for VP talk is really about raising her profile so that she becomes a viable heir apparent to Pelosi.
A core problem is that every democrat in power is 70+ years old. Actual democratic voters are desperate for a seismic shift in tone, strategy and policy goals, but the leadership is comprised of geriatric, ghoulish sellouts trying time limp across the finish line.
You really think THIS GUY is going to lead us to the promised land?
Jayapal is probably the best choice that seems even remotely likely. I think she could definitely be the next Speaker.
Much like the Ted Lieu idea, absolutely fucking not unless the Democrats take the Senate.
All this talk about a new bill has me wondering when I will see a dime from my early-June UI claim.
I’m not laughing at them just yet. So far she’s just continuing to negotiate against herself. Why stop her? She might come down to 1.5T or 1.2T or 1T or 800B.
This timeline is not fun. Jesus Christ every single day feels like a week and every slow day a month.
I think GTO strategy for Democrats is to offer Republicans a federal tax cut to 5% for all income brackets, and let the GOP decide how to spend it.
Then increase taxes in blue states and do all the things that need to be done. I know the problem is that you can’t print money to get yourself out of a jam, but you can tax the wealthy at 90% to get yourself out of a jam so fuck it.
We subsidize the poor red states, then they tell us to kiss their ass if and when we ever need help. Then we go back to subsidizing them and in the next crisis we get to kiss their ass again. Fuck em, they’re terrorists. Let the Deep South turn into a third world region with shit infrastructure, shit schools (already there), shit social welfare programs, etc. Let blue states have single payer, strong unemployment, and competent governance. See how the GOP fares under that system… And when they need some help, tell them to kiss our ass: vote blue.
This is something I haven’t really understood. Why do you think this is a big deal? What kind of otherwise-successful lawsuits are you imagining being prevented by this? Customers are not going to be able to successfully sue a business for catching COVID and I have a hard time seeing employees successfully suing either. Primarily because there’s such a small likelihood of successfully claiming, “I got COVID, and this is definitively where it came from, and it is absolutely due to gross negligence on their behalf.”
Not a criticism of your position, just having a hard time seeing this point of view.
Your optimal strategy is to cut the tax rate to 5%, and give the GOP full discretion over government spending? This is quite the galaxy-brain take.
They’re going to spend it all on military and we can then tax progressively at the state level. Within a decade the GOP will wipe itself out by running red states into the ground, while blue states will be well-functioning societies. No more negotiating with terrorists.
This really could be the end of the strong federal government era. Trump really may have broken something by not having a national response to a global pandemic. I’m honestly for it at this point.
I mean the GOP kept telling us that the Federal government was fatally flawed and couldn’t be trusted… and here we are with the federal government failing us as a nation in a truly spectacular way. True it’s because the GOP position was really ‘government is fatally flawed and can’t be trusted because assholes like us can still sabotage it, which means what we really need is a despot who can make things happen.’ But they may not be wrong. It may not be possible to run a successful democracy of our size.
I’ve been much more impressed by the state governments of well run states than I have by anyone else since this crisis started. The state of Washington really did crush this.
