Apollo 13 in real-time & other Space stuff

Lot of speculation that the software wasn’t removed but that the other issues they now found require significant changes to the software.

That makes a lot more sense, but if the software control algorithms are no longer valid… is it safe for a human trained with the same expectations to fly it?

One example mentioned is that you can tell a human to check temperatures and shut off a thruster earlier than previously recommended but you would have to write new code for that if fully automated. Same for any other procedures they might have come up with to avoid issues that were found.

It’s official: Starliner is returning empty and Butch and Suni are coming back on the Crew 9 Dragon.

Coming back Feb 2025, crazy.

A threeeee hour tour.

Truly unreal overruns here:

$2.7 billion for just the launch tower for SLS. The contract for developing Starship plus a crewed flight to the freaking moon was only $2.9 billion. Just mind boggling.

Oh Gizmodo. 300 million light years is a big chunk of the known universe. The Milky Way is only 100k light years across.

The paper says “100 pc” which I assume parsecs, which = 3 light years, not 3 million light years. So the black holes are about 300 light years apart, which makes infinitely more sense.

TBF, these enormous numbers are hard to have much of a feel for if you don’t work with them often. 300 million ly is less than 1% of the radius of the observable universe but it’s 120 times the distance between the Milky Way and Andromeda, which both contain supermassive black holes.

I just started Janna Levin’s little book, Black Hole Survival Guide. I don’t know how much I’ll learn, but she’s a very good writer.

Starship Flight Test 5 is scheduled for 2 hours from now. This time they’re gonna attempt to catch the booster. Unofficial but well informed stream is live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC87WmFN_As

Very tight timing window with only 5 minutes of leeway. Can’t believe they’re going to try to return it to the tower, and obv very interested to see if they can keep the ship flaps less melty this time!

Official stream is live. Unfortunately it’s on that website: https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1RDGlyognOgJL

Tower is go for catch, let’s do this.

Holy shit that was wild.

Oh my god.

OH MY FUCKING GOD, they did it

That may be the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. Will have to sit with that for a bit to process.
