It was the oldest galaxy discovered for about a week
Previously oldest galaxy: “fuck”
did you hear about pluto?
Well sure, the thermosphere isn’t going to denazify itself.
Very cool read:
lol there’s always someone who has to write that article
SLS purportedly launching tomorrow morning (8:30am ET):
Japan has a lander probe on this that I think(?) will be the first time anyone’s landed something on the dark side of the moon.
compared to other stuff we barely spend anything on nasa, this is one of the rare good things i think
even if there’s not a ton seemingly gained by a moon mission, it does help researchers, plus we’re heading towards a future where being generally good at spaceflight’s gonna be a huge boon i think. lots of this mission is testing stuff out for the future
It’s step toward establishing a permanent base on the moon and going to Mars from there. It’s a reasonable approach if you think manned exploration is worthwhile. I don’t. And I don’t particularly care that it’s more expensive than Elon’s promised alternatives. It’s just ~pointless imo. I doubt MAGA really cares about it. There are other constituencies.
I think the case for manned space exploration on the moon is dubious. Still I’ll be excited to see it happen.
Space exploration and technology is literally the only thing that people can do that matters for the viability of humanity. Otherwise we are just jerking it until we kill ourselves off by ruining this stupid planet.
Exploration isn’t enough for that. You’re talking about establishing permanent colonies, colonies that wouldn’t be self-sufficient for a very long time, if ever. Chemical rocket technology is limited and crude and might be too polluting to support a big expansion of space travel and exploration, much less colonization. I think we need a better propulsion system to come along, and that seems very unlikely any time soon.
What we’ve got is adequate to get small groups to the moon and Mars, where they will stay and likely soon die. We’ll be forced to accept that it’s an impractical idea. A dead end like Apollo. We’re stuck here.
You might be right, but the only way to push the ball forward is continuing to push the technological envelope. Nothing is possible until it is. Send in SweetSummerChild.
The technological envelope has barely expanded in 70 years. And we don’t need to send people to do most of that. We aren’t ready.
