Doesnât need to be cargo, âscheduled serviceâ doesnât make up the entirety of passenger flights. There are probably charter flights and personally owned aircraft that fly between the countries every day.

Every time something like this is posted I see a bunch of people saying âlook at these fucking idiots carrying their bagsâ. And I know youâre not supposed to do that. But if Iâm about to exit a plane that I think might combust in the next 90 seconds and my laptop is in a bag on my lap I am probably bringing it with me. How dumb am I?

Pretty presumptuous to assume that these people are actually carrying their own bags. If Iâm in this situation I am grabbing a couple from first class.

Judging from the number of planes that donât have their landing gear catch on fire I imagine this will be a maintenance issue or cheap counterfeit part issue and not a manufacturing issue.
I thought there was a crackdown on counterfeit airplane parts a couple decades ago. Saw the Mayday on it.

This is an extreme hot button issue. If you take > 0 seconds to get any belongings when your plane is on fire, including the time it takes to put on a backpack, you are an asshole. When there are hundreds of people trying to evacuate, all of those seconds and fractions of seconds compound, potentially cremating the people who are last to exit.
Of course in this situation, it probably wouldnât have mattered. But you just donât have that information so you are literally making the judgement that your stuff is more important than the kid in 34F burning alive.
Evacuating with baggage also opens the chance that it gets snagged on something and further slows the process.
But my life saving medication is in that bag! Either carry what you need for a few hours on your person or if you will die without it for 3 hours you probably shouldnât be flying.
Anyone that comes down the slide with luggage should be immediately run over by an emergency vehicle. But of course those selfish fucks actually get the best of it when they donât incinerate a kid, and our society is entirely Lord of the Flies so go nuts and see if they have any snacks on the way out.

Wasnât there a Japanese airline that evacuated a burning flight in 90 seconds?
I would imagine that the urgency and instructions from the flight team would be different.
Of course it could just be Americans suck and Japanese are elite plane evacuaters
We donât know what it was like in the plane, we donât how long the line didnât move while people were getting up and out of their seats. It is entirely possible that people could get some of their belongings without slowing the line down at all.
Maybe. Also entirely possible someone could bonk someone with their backpack or snag it on the exit/slide, etc. etc. etc. People are bad at estimating their capabilities not to slow others down or anticipate unintended consequences. Which is why everyone is explicitly told to leave everything behind in an emergency evacuation, as Iâm sure they were in this case.

People should never be making this decision in any evacuation. Itâs not up to them. Nothing anyone can ever have on the plane is more important than other lives.
I am absolutely sure you are correct, but I am definitely curious: your laptop is in a small bag that you stowed under the seat in front of you (this is how I do it). When itâs your turn to evacuate youâre leaving it there? Again I totally acknowledge that would be the correct thing to do.
