Afghanistan Wars: The Taliban Strikes Back.

Many will try to move on to Europe or other places. Living in Iran as an undocumented refugee is pretty bad.

I’m not sure it’s better to be a documented refugee.

It’s recency bias that has Joe at 21%.

Dubya has whitewashed his legacy because of how bad Donald Trump was.

Bush >>>>>> Obama >> Trump >>>>>>> Biden is correct, right?

I’ve got Bush, Obama, Biden, Trump because I’m giving Biden some credit for his 8 years as VP. And perhaps we wouldn’t even be getting out right now if Trump hadn’t pulled off his idiotic deal with the Taliban. (I could be missing some stuff as I can barely pay any attention to politics these days it makes me too pissed off.)

I was just thinking as POTUS. It crossed my mind to assign Biden some blame going way back into his long hawkish career in congress, but at POTUS he gets virtually no blame. He voted to authorize the war in 2001 (like everyone else in congress save Barbara Lee).

Public is still 2:1 in favor of getting the f out of Afghanistan despite wall-to-wall pro-war media coverage, that’s good to see.

Yesterday my 12 year old asked me what the heck was going on with Afghanistan. I explained the basic history and that the United States was walking away from an unsolvable problem that it (we) had a huge hand in creating, and that an enormous amount of human suffering was caused by our actions and with our money. This child who is, frankly, a total knucklehead in almost all things, immediately asked “Why didn’t we try to get as many innocent people out of Afghanistan as possible before we left?” (I’m paraphrasing). It is, and remains, a good question.

The answer is obvious. The government didn’t want them.

Probably didn’t want to tip their hand to the people as to what was happening either.

A fair number of people might be ok with 10k Afghan refugees, hopefully in some other state, but if you polled the US on bringing over 100k or 200k Afghan refugees? I don’t think you’d get double digits.

not sure if its reverse engineering, but Biden said he was one of the leave voices in Obama’s administration.

“But I wonder if Biden didn’t also carry some of the scars of his past battles over Afghanistan into his decision-making as Commander-in Chief. Was he so determined not to be cowed by the Pentagon, as perhaps he felt Obama was, that he ignored warnings he should have heeded? Was he so eager to deliver a final rebuke to Gates and others, who dismissed his concerns 12 years ago, that he moved too fast?”

I don’t think a mass evacuation before the pull out would have been feasible. We just saw how fast things unravel once everyone knew the jig was up, and such an evacuation programme would have let everyone know the jig was up. The Taliban, while incentivised to want the US gone and to facilitate that, would not have facilitated an ongoing evacuation of whoever wanted to go (we just saw that as well). Biden, as he’s said, couldn’t have put in more troops and started fighting the Taliban to secure the whole thing with US power as that would have been interpreted as abandoning the deal.

All that said, at this point the key negotiation for the West should be to get as many people out as possible and to give them citizenship ASAP. Though, like micro said, the idea that the US or another western power will willingly welcome tens of thousands plus of refugees is fiction.

Here’s more fiction: the West should give aid to Iran for Afghan immigrants.

(note, below is just officially recognized refugees)

Same kind of thing went on with Syrian and Iraqi refugees where they have landed in huge camps and generally not allowed to work in Jordan or Lebanon and helping destablize those countries because they can’t afford it. But…we want to destabilize Iran.

Here’s Poland getting ready:

Is poland still controlled by the crazy far right essentially Nazis? Shit is so crazy considering that countries history.

Children beating the Jew is effigy in Poland in 2019.

Not sure who controls Poland, but the current President of Poland is a Liberal and the Prime Minister is some kind of right-winger.

And totally unsurprising. The Poles have pretty much always been virulently antisemitic.
