What task was the previous governance committee assingned with and failed to perform?
Wish I could give credit to whoever it was on exiled that pointed out how the GC was sent down a rabbit hole of minutiae to derive how issues were to be asked and answered while no questions were ever actually asked an answered. But the tech committee, who are clearly now the governing body, have made decisions without adhering to those procedures or much consideration to what seem to be reasonable concerns along the way.
Asian has a point, and while some may percieve his approach as dickish, that doesn’t mean he’s wrong or his concern should be dismissed.
There is no tech committee. There is no governing body. There are 3 admins doing tech stuff, all of whom in one way or another have been constantly begging the community to step forward and start governing itself. It continues to not happen, and now we (or is it just me?) are being blamed for… I’m not even sure what.
Little or no government is good. There’s not that much to govern. If someone like SA or KofNY really wants something to change they should do the politicking of garnering support, leading discussions and starting polls. It’s a process. Maybe that’s what’s happening, but at least have something specific in mind you want done, not just “hold up, let’s rehash stuff”. It’s not without risk of people giving up of course.
Like, I’m not doing this, but OBVIOUSLY “Fuck off, I’m sending everyone their money back and they can send it to you if they want” is a thought that occurs to me. I’m pretty sure “Fuck off, I’m cancelling the account I signed up for” is something that would occur to zikzak. And “Fuck off, I’ve been bending over backwards just for you” is something that occurs to gregorio.
I have been traveling for a while and may have missed it but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the community that decided to start posting ads.
Whatever labels you want to use (or hide from), the 3 admins are making forum-wide decisions and are serving as the governing body. It’s not a critique to point this out. What seems disingenuous though is to pretend you’re not in charge, and in turn not give consideration to a long-time and important poster’s seemly legit concern.
The future of Unstuck Politics seems unlikely to develop into the community-driven collaborative project many hoped for due to low participation levels. However, there are still a few working to push things along and get us all into our new home. Would you support a small number of people taking full responsibility for this under roughly the following conditions?
This group will secure hosting services, install and administer forum software, and develop new features where appropriate
This group will solicit funding to pay for the above through donations, Patreon subscriptions, advertisements or similar
This group will have the community’s permission to distribute any net revenue to itself or otherwise disburse as it sees fit
This group will operate per community guidance in support of the community’s best interests
This group will operate as transparently as possible
This group will not “own” Unstuck Politics, and possibly may not take ownership of the domain either
This group will not be responsible for or involved with the community’s internal governance, although individual group members may still participate if they choose
This group will essentially function as a caretaker for the community and operate in roughly the same way ProBoards does for Exiled Politics, but with community members behind the scenes rather than nameless people we don’t know
If you don’t think there should be ads, that’s fine, but community approval was pretty clear. That doesn’t mean they are necessarily permanent, but it wasn’t a coup or something snuck in while people weren’t paying attention.
I’m sorry I made you feel bad because I like you a lot, you know I do. But really you should quit. The admins are acting in a fashion completely disconnected from the democratic socialist principles which our community believes in. Their attempt to turn our community into an investment vehicle for themselves at the expense of the users is pure corruption. If I were a part of it I would resign instead of getting mad at the person pointing it out.
The kerfuffle over the software would be the other example.
But running ads seems to be a pretty significant decision that (in hindsight) may not have been treated with the respect and discussion before hand that it deserved.
If you percieve that vote on a different website as carte blanche “community approval” because the word “advertisement” was somewhere in that laundry list, we’ll have to agree to disagree.
