About Moderation (old original thread)

I’m confused about why people are saying the escalating bans are intended to prevent that behaviour when it’s manifestly clear that they don’t. Everything you’re saying is emphatically confirming that they don’t!

And yeah, I really don’t think “Get fucked, asshole” warrants a ban. People are going to disagree and get heated. Cursing people out isn’t good posting, but it is well-nigh inevitable posting. It seems about as much work for a mod to delete the post as to issue a temp-ban in that spot, if Real Bad Swears are so intolerable.

Yep, I stand by it - bullshit ban, kinda-sorta bullshit in the first place, absolute bullshit being a week,.

It’s not really a guarantee, either. I was temp-banned a while ago for sarcasm.

I have to be honest, I’ve put in a lot of work this week to try to help those you who feel aggrieved by the current situation on this forum. The fact that some of you have been unable to tone it down for a few weeks while we get some things sorted out here that will be a large net positive for you and for the forum as a whole is pretty disappointing to me.

It’s ok to let go of a grievance and not make a big fuss about it. Not everything needs to go exactly your way for it to be acceptable. Even for the current ban of Marty for a week. Ok you disagree with the length of the ban? If you tel me you disagree with the ban itself then we’re fundamentally just not going to agree on how to keep community standards. Either way, what does it matter in comparison to the other things we’re trying to accomplish?

You’re aware this is what they say about people who hold your view, and that there’s quite a few who disagree with you because they’ve seen it first hand, when you haven’t?

Cursing people out occasionally is tolerable. Doing it repeatedly over several posts seems abusive.

Are people really crippled communication-wise if they can’t use profanity?

It absolutely deserves a ban every single time. It contributes nothing to a community.

No more than they’re crippled in terms of emotional well-being by reading the words “Get fucked, asshole.”

Why a ban rather than deleting the post?

Give me time.

This is at least an honest answer. I’m pretty sure the community at large disagrees.

I’m pretty tolerant of people who are completely wrong.

Here’s the thing, if someone tells me this irl, I’m probably done communicating with them. On a forum like this, it’s unavoidable unless one of us leaves. This is the exact reason having community standards for a forum is important. Either that’s unacceptable or someone engages in the community understanding that they might be told “get fucked asshole” at anytime by any user.

I appreciate the work you’ve been doing. I think one thing to keep in mind is that there are maybe a dozen posters who look at all of this like the post-break up grieving rather than marriage counseling. I’m not sure they’re wrong, but you won’t be able to get them to cool things down.

I personally think Wookie taking a week ban as recognition of his culpability on all of this would go a long way. But then NBZ will say I’m not seeing reality and we’re off to the races.

We are not debating with ourselves. And tone it down, seriously? It’s takes two parties to reconcile.

It’s unavoidable unless one party leaves or makes use of the ignore function.

They still might! It’s apparently unacceptable and it still happened!

A bit of withering, well structured sarcasm is quite pleasing imo. It’s especially delicious when the object of the scorn misinterprets the comment as a compliment.

Yes, that is what we are saying.

That is what the post report button is for.

If someone is unable to contribute to a community without personally attacking other members of the community, then I would rather see those members removed via temp bans and eventually permanent bans than to allow that behavior to continue.

There’s obviously a level/frequency of vitriol where exclusion becomes appropriate. I really just cannot see “Get fucked, asshole” as getting to that threshold, unless it’s like every post to every poster.

Like, marty, decadish-long member of the community, permanently excluded for saying “Get fucked, asshole” one time too many? Are you serious?

I don’t (or very rarely, not going to say never because I’ve probably reported a couple) report posts. But apparently, there must be a large group of people who only report posts made by people they don’t like. It’s the only legit explanation I can come up with for why certain people always get modded and others don’t.

PS - I’ve also heard that many reported posts along with PMs to mods have been routinely ignored.
