Can’t believe I’m saying this, but we don’t need to defund the police. We need to defund the grift of the inustrialized military complex that pays the manufacturers of all the guns and leftover military equipment that police departments buy and use. That would go a long way towards demilitarizing police
Hopefully you could call some kind of community defense that doesn’t create more violence than it “solves”. This is a big part of it, though, is that for some reason a net increase in public safety isn’t enough, and people require perfection? @PocketChads
That sounds like a white militia, no? You don’t see any potential problems with that - ya know, who watches the watchmen yada yada?
Well, I assume I am the only poster itt to have a nuclear family member involved in a fatal police shooting. Even saying this alone gives someone enough personal info on myself based on previous posts.
I don’t see how anyone else can really give you guidance here. We don’t know how trainwreckable you are or if you have any online “enemies”. I don’t think it’s common for people to get effed with. I’ve put enough info out there for someone to show up at my front door and it hasn’t happened. But, something along those lines has happened at least a couple times on 2p2.
Sounds interesting, but it’s certainly understandable if you want to keep it private.
Completely agree. Share only what you are comfortable sharing.
I imagine that everyone on this forum has had some direct and many indirect interactions with police during their lifetime. Personally I have directly interacted with police on only a few occasions but on these occasions I have witnessed the police abusing their authority and escalating a non-violent situation into a violent situation.
Personal experience can greatly influence how any of us feel about police. Of course, personal experience is not required to come to believe that police tactics and police brutality are problematic to say the least.
And maybe, in the end, the majority of people won’t want to abolish the police, but they should be allowed to know that is an option on the table and encouraged to think about it so that they can make an informed choice.
The problem is that “abolish” is super confusing and vague. Abolish is going to sound like “won’t exist” to lots of people.
And if that is what people are advocating, then you are getting high on your own supply.
I mean, suppose someone is swerving through traffic drunk - you are supposed to call “community elders” to figure it out? Are we really having this conversation?
I told this story recently, but I called an ambulance for an injured homeless person and the cops showed up, put handcuffs on him and threw him in the back of their car. I’ve never had a positive interaction with the police when they were doing their duty (other than being friendly when they gave me a ticket and chatting with the cops who arrested me at a protest).
I have saved someone who was being mugged and assaulted though and will continue to step up when I can whether or not there are police around. If I had just called the cops they would have been there in time to maybe get the guy an ambulance.
I called a university cop when I was touring college campuses. Some big dude (probably on drugs) was accosting our family and threatening to beat up my dad if he didn’t give him money. The cops chased him away.
On the other hand, my sister was seriously injured when a cop car sped through an intersection with no siren on and crashed into the car she was riding in. Her friend was killed in that crash. So YMMV.
The most dangerous thing I’ve seen in my neighborhood, and it’s happened several times, is cops driving at ridiculous speeds down the narrow sidewalkless streets. One time it was because two brothers got into a pushing/shoving/wrestling fight. Other times, I have no idea.
Oh yeah, one time the cops thought there was a home invasion thing because someone didn’t like what they saw on their Ring security system (it was two people dropping off a delivery to the wrong house). Cops shut down multiple blocks, helicopters flew overhead, and cops pointed their guns at people.
Freshman year the guy in the next room over would always fight with his girlfriend and I’d hear it through the wall. One night it sounded like he was beating her, I heard stuff breaking and her screaming. I called the police, and asked to keep it anonymous - he was a big guy.
They showed up, never saw the girl there again, so that was good. But the first words out of their mouth were “The guy in the next room over called.”
He threatened me and cornered me a couple times but a couple friends got my back and told him if I got hurt, he was getting hurt.
Score it as you will. Cops have been huge dicks to me on numerous occasions, never worse than that but obviously I’m white. They’ve been straight up useless once or twice, I’ve never been in a true emergency situation that required police that I can think of.
Abolishing the police as they currently exist does not mean abandoning the entire concept of a legal system. This really shouldn’t be a difficult thing to understand.
