Credit where it’s due, I think most (Dutch) people already added the gold medal to the tally when the final lap started, including the commentators and Konijn’s coach. That final lap from Lollobrigida was some serious WIM.

I find it odd that Sweden, Finland, and Denmark have longstanding international hockey relevance, while Norway has none.

Your assumption in most cases should be it goes from worst to best in stuff like speed skating. Sometimes someone breaks the mold, but for the most part that’s how it works and it’s probably usually based on seasonal rankings. I’m not quite sure how skiiing works, but it was clear the last 10 in Super G had no chance. Maybe the best are the middle 10 in that.

For short track, often when a person falls once it keeps happening for them. I think the issue was blade related because the Americans had an inordinate amount of falls and many weren’t due to contact. Even the person who replaced her in the B Final fell. She fell again in the 500.
U.S. short track is not good or competitive and I can’t remember the last time it was. Apolo used to get a lot of s*** for his often vicious commentary. He would have had a field day with that.

The US cross country woman seeming like she was going to die for like 15 minutes after the race. I was legit worried about her. I’ve had bruised ribs where it was shooting pain to take anything more than a super shallow breath. I can’t even imagine.
The drone shot behind the long track skaters, where you can see the fans in stands and curvature of the stadium, is really cool. There’s something about ice skating. Has to be the most elegant form of human locomotion. Francesca Lollobrigida is never going to have to pay for a plate of gabagool again in her life. Caveat, I have no idea what gabagool is.
Snowboard cross continues to be the most exciting and most unfair event. Well maybe short-track skating as well.
The women’s super-G when it was foggy flat light was hard to watch. Seems pretty unfair to make some of them ski in those conditions when some got to go before the fog set in.

Denmark? Not so sure about that. Norway has a lot more coastline is how it being a non-powerhouse in hockey was explained to me. I forget if that keeps the country more temperate, so less ideal ice rink conditions or maybe more surfers, definitely more skiers too.

Figure skating gonna figure skating.
Quite the age spread on the mens 10.000m speedskating podium today, 1st place for a 19-year old and 3rd place for a 40-year old.
It’s interesting, the long distances (5k and 10k) used to be a Dutch affair, but the last couple Olympics it’s been pretty dire. Instead, the Dutch have been more competitive at the sprint distances and short track. May be hard to imagine for such a skating nation, in particular after last nights double gold, but the first ever medal at short track for the Netherlands was a bronze medal in 2014 for Sjinkie Knegt. Now the Dutch are a powerhouse at short track.
Set the alarm for the last 3 men in figure skating and the 2nd and 3rd after the short programm fell after jumps. Those back flips are insane if you get them wrong.
Can’t imagine Mailin gets too aggressive here with everyone else falling.
