Someone explain that blocked punt to me like I’m 5. The Bengals were still short of a 1st down when they recovered it. And Dallas never had possession of it. I’m guessing it has to do w/ the ball landing past the line of scrimmage?
Edit: Oh yea, it’s the same as the punt returner fumbling.

so when the bengals recovered it’s a first down even if it ended up behind them 30 yards
I think it’s more like a muffed punt. I can’t be arsed up to look it up but I think recovering team can advance a punt return that is caught and subsequently fumbled. But if it is muffed, then the recovering team can’t advance it and just gets the ball where it was recovered it.
I assume someone here knows for sure.
The Chiefs got hosed on a blocked punt like this vs. the Broncos. Blocked the punt, it shot straight ahead just past the LOS and hit a Chiefs’ D-lineman, Denver recovered. This was back when roles were reversed and we couldn’t beat Elway to save our lives.

Just for fun, had to look up the old Leon Lett Thanksgiving play. That one was so much more hilarious because everyone was standing around for like 5s clearly not caring about the ball and he just comes out of nowhere to try to dive on it like an asshole. At least in last night’s play, Oruwariye has the plausible excuse that the ball is bouncing around in traffic and maybe he’s not sure if somebody else has already touched it, or if he lets it go does it bounce off another teammate, etc.
I was at that game. Was a miserable drive home.
Yeah I was at my aunt and uncle’s house, was basically the only one paying attention. I remember going back and forth between cursing at the TV and having to explain to everyone what just happened and why it was fucking stupid.
My entire family are Giants fans. My sister’s husband at the time was a Dolphins fan. My family hated him and my sister divorced him like 2 years later. They were at his parents house and left at the 2 min warning because they assumed Dallas was gonna win. He missed the entire thing lol. And there was no internet back then so he didn’t even believe us until he saw it on the 11 PM news.
