I donât understand what is strange about it at all. If someone happens to die during a longer sentence, thatâs just shit that happens. It would be acceptable critique to any form of punishment. Youâre going to fine someone? OK, but what if he dies before he pays? Then he gets off. LOL fines? Youâre going to sentence someone to six months of community service? What if he dies one month in? LOL community service?
Life sentences seem very punitive specifically to younger people. Makes little sense, especially since older criminals should know better - if anything they should get longer sentences, not shorter. Also unfair for people who stayed in shape and took care of themselves before getting turning to a life of crime. Just sends a terrible message imo.
Thatâs a different issue, imo. I think that accounting for age when sentencing someone is a good idea. Doesnât make life sentences something that should never be done.
Would you say that life sentences are unfair to people who are richer and more successful because the difference between their regular lives and lives inside jail is greater?
I wouldnât say that there is nothing to your point, but itâs such a minor thing that I donât even care.
Iâd also be interested in how incarceration affects lifespan. I suspect that after you are inside for several years, health outcomes tend to converge no matter how healthy or unhealthy you may have been going in. I donât really have time to do a deep dive, but I be interested in seeing data on this.

If some generally agrees with all liberal tenets except for trans rights, theyâd be a liberal who happens to be wrong about trans rights. I wouldnât kick them out of the club, but I also wouldnât try to coddle them.

NBZâs point may have been that when someone criticizes Democrats about something that you might be more towards being a centrist on (probably something more along economic lines) you accuse them of purity testing, but when itâs something along the social lines where you are very far on the liberal/left side itâs a core issue.
I assume you are directing this generally and not that I am centrist?
Either way I think this is generally true.
I think youâre pretty radical on some things and at least somewhat more towards the center on others.

For sure. I would agree I still lean righter than you for example on some economics but I am way way left of where I was 5 years ago thanks to you and others on this forum.

Iâm not pure âleftâ by any means myself and I donât mean to criticize your politics here. Iâm just saying that thinking some old union activist type Democrat who wants to ban trans people from sports or using the bathroom they wish to doesnât have a place in the party is just as much purity testing as is thinking a trans ally who doesnât support universal health care doesnât.
(I know you support both uhc and trans people)
