I agree with this. The caveat is that you’re assuming the learner speaks a language that uses the English alphabet (since that is what they use). If you only speak, read and write Japanese, I think it would be harder. But not that much.
When I tried to speak it I probably sounded like a caveman, but I was always understood.
In case this isn’t too well-known, the Indian actor in that scene attacked an ex and went to jail for attempted murder. I knew him for a long time before this happened and he was super-normal.
“an former Indian-American”, some wikipedia editor just slid that “former” in without reading the whole sentence. Also happy 60th birthday in a few days!
edit: Also damn, surviving being stabbed 23 times. Also damn, you can get “life imprisonment” and be out in 8 years in the US? Damn!
At the risk of being about as topical as a “what’s the deal with airline food” stand-up routine, why do they call it life imprisonment when you’re out after eight years! This has shaken me to my very core, you guys are nuts.
I just pay youtube money so they don’t give me ads. It works across all devices (computer, tv, phone) and I can download videos via youtube app for offline. Really handy for the kid.
We may be talking past each other (or maybe not), but there are two separate things here.
Stabbing someone 23 times puts you in jail for 8 years.
“Life imprisonment” puts you in jail for 8 years.
I’m talking about (and let’s be honest, joking about) the second point. It’s weird to put someone in prison for life and then letting them out eight years later! Call the sentence “fairly serious crime, don’t stab people please, 8 years in prison” or something instead.
Sweden’s (can’t speak for Finland or Denmark) system may or may not be weird too.
In this case the sentence was a range from 12 years to the rest of his life. Most “life” sentences are a range like this and if the courts want to actually send someone to jail until they die they’ll get multiple life sentences that have to be served consecutively.
I get all of that, my only point was that it’s the same in Sweden. If you get a life sentence over there (which is very rare), the odds are that you will be released before you die.
Life sentences are a terrible idea and should be done away with. There is no way to know how long someone is going to live so I don’t know how you can say how long is an appropriate time. This guy could have died 6 months into his sentence and that would be OK, but he actually served 16 times that long and it seems too short? Very strange to me.
At any rate, younger people would expect to live longer so life sentences may be an illegal form of age discrimination.
I had to turn off adblockers. I use a different browser for YouTube now because turning the ad blocker off didn’t work I still got their messages. Now I get a million Buick ads every day.
