More often I think they’re investing in rarity/uniqueness, either as a flippable investment or, if they intend to never sell, for the personal thrill and bragging rights of owning a 1/1.
I think the visceral objection to the duct tape banana is the objects are so ordinary that it loses the feeling of rarity–which is exacerbated by the impermanence of the banana–then what you’re really buying is the ‘certificate of authenticity’ card with the name Banksy on it.
The impermanent nature is the point right. It’s like his painting that had a shredder installed in the frame so the moment it was purchased at auction he triggered the shredder and it passed through in shreds.
I’m not an art aficionado, but yes, I’m sure it is. Still, to me, the difference between those two pieces is the shredded paper is still there (and didn’t it only shred half the picture?) At some point soon, the banana won’t be the original, and you’ll need to replace the duct tape if you keep peeling it from the wall to replace the banana.
