I guess you can call hostages, allies, when you’ve got the pen
Tough to wake up to this even though I knew it was over before I went to sleep.
Very tough to see any coming back from this. The Dems completely blew their political capital gained from being the resistance to Trump on pretty close to nothing. No real progress and no meaningful prosecution of Trump.
Not going after Trump for a literal coup is going to go down as a monumental mistake. Not doing anything about the Supreme Court with a trifecta under Biden is going to go down as a monumental mistake. Allowing Biden to run unopposed this year while severely declining is going to go down as a monumental mistake. Essentially rigging the 2016 and 2020 primaries will go down as a monumental mistake.
In short the Dems have badly fucked up the post-Obama era and we all get to suffer the consequences of it. Fun.
I was looking at the chart trying to figure out why it’s wrong as things have obviously gotten worse for me then I realized I guess I’m actually in the top 20%, so that’s cool.
More SSC stuff probably, but I find myself weirdly wishing now that he had beaten Biden so that sitting here today, he’d be done and leaving the stage. The whiplash of feeling like we were done with him, only to have to now go through the exhaustion of it all for 4 more years, makes it seem so much worse.
Republicans cynically divide the country with racist anti-immigration, which is against the interests of rich people, and demonizing Trans people, and the answer from one person is to cut social security and the answer from another is to join in vilifying trans.
I stand by my more guns policy.
Was COVID just a black swan that stayed off the inevitable for 4 years?
Yes
Unclear whether this is a joke about how everyone dismisses plainly inflation-adjusted figures by saying that they aren’t adjusted for inflation or whether you genuinely believe that “real wages” means they aren’t adjusted for inflation.
My suggestion (though I’m not confident I’ll be able to follow my own advice) is to simply not go through the exhaustion and humiliation of consuming Donald Trump for the next 4 years. Take a lesson from those blissfully unaware that ultimately decided the election - following politics is stupid, nothing you do matters, it’s all an entertainment sport designed to take money from one group and shift it to another. Be the person who googled whether Joe Biden dropped out of the race yesterday, and not the person who can recite a list of each of the top 84 times when Donald Trump said something stupid or racist.
Out of all the scary things, having RFK Jr in charge of your children’s health has to be the most nauseating
one other small thing we should stop doing is saying shit like this. It does not help to openly call the people you hope to vote for you “low IQ” or to imply that they are stupid and voting against their interests.
I have tried to tell myself this. Also not sure I will be able to follow through, because we have this bug of actually caring, even the shitstorm doesn’t impact us directly. But I’m definitely thinking about how I can intentionally lessen my exposure to political news.
Based on the results today I seriously doubt a more competent democratic party would have won. The average American voter just prefers a facist racist in charge.
Here’s the thing though they did win everything in 2020 and did fuck all with it. Maybe it wouldnt have mattered but it sure didnt help.
+1. The extreme negative outcomes get a lot more likely too, because all these ghouls have had four years to nurse their grievances and scheme about how they could have executed more effectively. Trump I was unexpected, people didn’t know how to react, a lot of powerful people stayed on the sidelines because they weren’t sure it was a good idea to throw in with him. Trump II is going to be totally different. There’s a playbook from day 1, key stakeholders are bought in, and Trump himself is possibly so doddering that he won’t be able to spoke his own wheels as much as he’d otherwise be inclined to. Most of the Trump-skeptical Senators are gone. It’s real bad.
Crazy or designed that way?
Since we live in the darkest timeline, COVID keeping him away from the presidency is going to turn out to be bad, not good. Feel pretty safe that he’ll do more damage now than if he just kept on being president.
It shows wage gains, not wealth gains.
This isn’t the full picture and you know it.
At the same time, I have a pretty bleak view of humanity in general which has only been enforced the last 10 years or so, so I’m partially there with you.
I don’t think he was trying to show the full picture. I took
It to mean that Trump was elected despite the fact that the vast majority of wage/salaried people have shown considerable increases in their pay under Biden. It doesn’t matter, though.
