I appreciate rogan because he’s a great litmus test on people I dont know that well, if they listen to him religiously I immediately know I don’t have to take anything they say seriously again.
Exactly. Rogan is emblematic of the various groups that Democrats have written off.
How many times even on this forum have we seen people write off groups as a waste of time because they’re hopeless deplorables or already obviously going to vote Trump or whatever? How many purity tests? This is a really bad habit on the left.
It seems to me many Democrats have assumed they can get by with their coalition – women, minorities, technocrats, academics, etc – and so they simply didn’t try to win over other types of voters. And now it’s biting them in the ass as things have changed.
Young men are such a perfect example of this. There’s no reason why they were destined to be Republicans. But Democrats ignored them.
I think one thing that needs to be considered (and I could be off on this based on how much of the rights info comes from the internet) is that the media messaging when it comes to Ukraine funding sucks.
What percentage of people who say something like “We spent hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine instead od helping our country” think that we actually sent physical cash to Ukraine and not that the majority of the aid was in things like decomissioned military equipment?
That’s cause there aren’t any big democrats in the podcast/youtube sphere. There are some leftist types who will get mad at you if you don’t call what’s happening in Gaza a genocide or that trans women shouldn’t play women’s sports. There’s a million right wing podcasts from “moderate” to right wing nazis that all make millions and they all believe the same thing. That America is a conservative christian white country and you should always vote republicans.
I’m obv overstating the importance of Kamala going specifically on rogan. My argument is that I think Kamala needed to get of her comfort zone and rile things up a lot more than she did - and that involves walking into enemy venues. But a lot of dems seems to disagree, especially those in charge of Kamala, and it doesn’t make any sense from my point of view. It seems that both the pac and from some posters in this thread that they think it’s just too risky.
If someone can’t handle an hostile interview how are they going to handle hostile foreign leaders?
exactly…our leftwing streamers and the right wing derposphere have something in common…they both attack Democrats.
I’m not talking about getting podcasts and streamers going who talk about candidates and campaigns. I’m talking about getting podcasts and streamers who talk about sports or video games or comic book movies who just…aren’t misogynist assholes. The rest flows from that.
I feel like Democrats are the party that tells people to wear seat belts and that you shouldn’t bet all your money on sports. People don’t want to hear that shit. This is America!
I think the polls, which turned out to be a mirage, led people to be less risk adverse in regards to campaign strategy than they should have been.
Anyways, the DNC anointed Kamala as the democratic candidate, a candidate no one really wanted and the only things going for her was that she wasn’t Sleepy Joe and as the Vice President she was the easiest option on short notice. Voters weren’t excited to go to the polls to vote for her. Shocking.
The GOP is smart enough to run the candidate their base wants unlike the dumb dems.
Yeah this is what I meant by the Democrats deciding they didn’t want to be a left-wing party. The values and opinions of the working class are not welcome at all in the Dem coalition, they have been very clear about that. Putting a Biden mask on helped in 2020, but it doesn’t fix the fundamental rot.
I wrote this in 2021:
I’m more and more convinced we’re going to see a realignment where the Democrats become an aristocratic party like the Tories, with a sort of noblesse oblige attitude towards social and environmental issues, and the Republicans become a populist-right, fascist-adjacent party in the vein of the National Front, probably more detached from reality though.
I think you can see more and more of this in the GOP. J.D. Vance is more or less explicitly a National Front guy, you know, ethno-nationalism, religion, “family values” centric, at least pays lip service to the corrosive effects of capitalism. The big talking points of the Trump campaign were an immigration crackdown and doing protectionism. The problem is that the sort of voters the Dems expected them to have to alienate to make this shift - guys like Dick Cheney - for the most part don’t seem to be going anywhere. The result is that the GOP is simply expanding its coalition while cracks start to appear in the straining Dem coalition. The idea that they’re going to solve this by tacking back left seems like a fantasy. Their brand is poisonous among non college educated people.
There are people like that, they just arent overt in their leftism
Northernlion is one of the largest video game streamers in the world and has a noticeably leftward bent, but he rarely talks about his politics. Hes just a decent dude playing vgs.
The nazi vg streamers on the other hand, that is all they fucking talk about. All day long
Also how can you compellingly talk about the Democratic party/platform/politicians for days on end? You can’t its some combination of an empty vessel and a fraud.
The only good left wing pods rip the Dems(rightfully) to shreds. No one likes Democrats they have positioned themselves horribly.
they’ll just find an even dumber piece of shit to replace him
Yea the left leaning streamers usually have some sort of no politics rule because they know a large number of their viewers are right wingers and don’t want to deal with it.
No one talks about the Republican Party in reverential terms either though. Most ‘right wing’ podcasts do a version of ‘look at the crazy left wing thing’ without specifically mentioning the Republican Party. Most people aren’t institutionalists. They don’t care about the parties themselves.
Throughout the election I really had no idea what Harris stood for. What her policies were, etc. If there was a clear message, it didn’t come through to me. Didn’t matter though, because I was not voting for her. I was voting against Trump no matter who the Dems rolled out.
But just not being Donald Trump might not have been enough for everyone. With the Republicans, agree with them or not you know exactly what they stand for loud and clear.
Dems need to do likewise. Figure out exactly who they are, what they stand for, and begin shouting it from the rooftops with clear, simple, unapologetic messaging.
I don’t think we’re disagreeing but what Trump did was not release any kind of real policy. How will tax free overtime affect the budget? No one knows. How will he do deportations? Who knows? No one even bothered putting pen to paper. Trump got to say anything and that allowed him to be anything to anyone.
Harris did try some of that with talking about corporate greed responsible for inflation but both the media and apparently her brother in law shut those down.
I dunno. I hate myself so I listenened to 20 minutes or so of Ben Shapiro’s podcast on spotify today and it was loaded with praise for Daddy, Mike Johnson, even McConnell. Yes large parts of it were just ripping the Dems.
Well I don’t mean expressly political podcasts. I mean what gets labeled as vaguely right wing podcasts. I would suggest a Democrat goes on Shapiro’s podcast as a lark, but don’t make an effort out of it. But do make an effort to go on bros sitting on couches talking about sports, weightlifting, gaming etc.
