2024 Election POST MORTEM

Time will tell whether insulting voters who don’t vote “the right way” is an effective strategy.

Just speedran 300 posts in this thread. Lots of good stuff. I mostly agree with the “she should’ve done Rogan” comments. We need to go after the people who don’t consume politics all day every day. Those people are well solidified in their camps. I’m not saying there’s no value in energizing the base, or in driving turnout, but you gotta reach the apolitical voters. Trump did, and it’s a big part of why he won twice.

That said “It’s the economy, stupid” is undefeated. If shit got worse for people since the last election, the POTUS and his party will pay a price. It’s automatic. You’re giving the other candidate a head start no matter what you do and that’s always a tough battle to overcome in a narrowly divided country. The dems lost ground in this election. That’s no surprise. But it does appear we lost less ground in swing states where both parties were campaigning. That means our message does make a difference on the margins. In non-swing states where things were just left up to the fundamentals (vibes/economy/whatever) we took a bigger hit. I donated some money for the first time ever (god I hope I still have disposal income in the next 2-4 years). I think I’m volunteering next time around. Free time is hard to come by but my kids will be older and I think I can swing it. I’m motivated more than ever to keep this shit from happening again.

But I swear to god any dems who text me for money in the next year is getting a reply of a photo of my taint, balls, and asshole.

Did Biden ever say, “I protected your pensions” Much less repeat it like a mates in the way that Trump does. I honestly don’t know, but I can’t recall ever hearing it from him or his surrogates.

Time already did tell and it’s stupid as hell. Insulting anyone as a politician is probably the wrong move. Unless you’re running a hate based campaign and are using bullying of marginalized people as a tactic. I’m all for dems switching up their messaging and tactics a bit after this one, but any sort of bullying and/or being a dick is a non-starter for me.

Yes the problem is almost definitely that Biden never said it, and not how people get their information. Hopefully next time our Democratic president will “use the bully pulpit” so when people tune into PBS News Hour they will know about all the good things he did for them, then we will win. /s

It’s not one thing or the other. It’s both. But even if you snap your fingers and all media is no longer spewing right wing messaging you still need people out there talking about the things that Biden has done on these new media outlets for people to know about it. It needs to be constant, too.

No one’s argument is that Democrats should do bad things, or Democrats shouldn’t tell people about the good things they are doing for people.

TBF the inflation question is stupid because shit really is a lot more expensive than it was 4 years ago. Even if it’s stopped inflating, people still can’t afford shit, and trying to give them an economic lesson on it is never going to work. Just say you’re going to make groceries more affordable and then do it.

As for the rest, the cultists are going to give their answers. Re-run this survey in like 4 months and magically a lot of Trump voters will flip their answers. IDGAF about that. But there are some people, probably a small percent, but enough that it could matter, that did choose the wrong answers on crime and immigration because dems lost the messaging war. That might be fixable.

Border patrol had as many as 250000 encounters in a month in 2023. That’s what happened. It’s not a right wing talking point. The nonsense about eating cats and being rapists doesn’t cause the anti-immigration sentiment, it’s the result of it. Look at your NextDoor posts. People don’t need any help to make monsters out of anyone they don’t want around.

I want to say the only solution is to raise the next generation of kids better, but I don’t know how to get people to raise their kids to be less hateful anymore than I know how to get them to be less hateful in the first place.

have them watch mr rogers every day from an early age and they’ll probably internalize a lot of empathy - rather than this youtube brainrot crap. If you guys think gen Z is bad, just wait for the ipad generation

Mr. Rogers certainly wouldn’t hurt, but I don’t know how to make them do that or anything else.

Right, I was mostly making a meta point that the media kids consume these days is overwhelmingly shitty. The most popular youtuber for kids is mrbeast by a wide margin. I cannot think of a worse role model or many worse human beings.

Man Jmakin you really have both some of the sharpest and some of the dumbest takes. You can’t think of a worse role model than someone who makes videos about building houses and curing blind people?

that is not what he does. You must not have been following the whole MrBeast saga this past year - lots of stuff has come out. His playbook for running the company was leaked, it’s essentially crafted to be as highly addictive to kids as possible and goes into extreme detail as to the techniques used (which are full of dark patterns were not really a secret, it’s spread across the entire content space now). Also wasn’t really a “secret” that all of his videos are heavily edited like reality TV and almost entirely staged. Then the nasty stuff about him covering for one of his staff’s um… pedophilic habits. There’s a massive lawsuit brewing about inhumane conditions at his latest hunger games thing that amazon was sponsoring. It’s outside the context of this thread but he is really terrible and I’d bet my meager net worth that he has someone locked in his basement.

Of course I can think of worse though, sorry for my hyperbole and thank you for the backhanded compliment lol

Yes I understand that he’s good at exploiting the youtube algo. That’s what makes creators like him successful. How does that take away from helping a bunch of blind and deaf kids? The pedo stuff as I understand it was him trying to support his trans friend? and not realizing what was happening :man_shrugging: Idk hard to fault him too hard without playing into a bunch of right-wing stereotypes.

Yw for the compliment, looking forward to you posting more here again.

I’m probably heavily biased even before this stuff came out because I absolutely hate how he’s hacked the content algorithm in a way where I don’t want to create content anymore or could never succeed without being extremely scummy

I think that’s the problem in a nutshell. You can’t campaign or message around a public that’s fundamentally misinformed. And I don’t know how you inform people that are either completely tuned out or getting news from billionaire perverts. Think we have a voting public that is dumb/misinformed in a way that isn’t fixable.

Mr. Beast is such an obvious heel, I’ll bet dollars to donuts his charity stuff is a tax dodge or some other complicated grift. I guess he’s a better role model than Andrew Tate or the public nuisance Kick streamers.
