So what do they use if not cash or credit cards?
Pay for everything with your phone via WeChat or Alipay (what Musk wants Twitter to be). It is actually quite convenient, but it requires setting everything up. Obviously it leaves a digital trail for everything you buy but thatâs China.
Cash is still accepted the vast majority of places, but is almost never used (and youâll annoy people when you do).
China more or less skipped over cards and went straight from cash to QR codes.
How does credit work?
I had a UnionPay debit card when I lived there. Do they not exist anymore?

Labor shortages:
A) Do not exist.
B) Even if they did, they definitely should not be used as a reason to import cheap labor.
(Iâm in favor of immigration, but because itâs the right thing to do, not because of any other reasons)

They are linked to your bank account. Apparently now itâs possible to set it up where you can fund your Alipay wallet via foreign credit card.
I donât know if banks issue physical credit cards anymore, but Alipay also has a gazillion financial products. Alipayâs credit score system is often conflated with the so-called âsocial creditâ which, depending on the exact details of what people have read/heard, doesnât really exist.
ATM cards are still a thing and years ago I sometimes used it to pay stuff.
