2023 LC Thread - It was predetermined that I would change the thread title (Part 1)

So what do they use if not cash or credit cards?

Pay for everything with your phone via WeChat or Alipay (what Musk wants Twitter to be). It is actually quite convenient, but it requires setting everything up. Obviously it leaves a digital trail for everything you buy but that’s China.

Cash is still accepted the vast majority of places, but is almost never used (and you’ll annoy people when you do).

China more or less skipped over cards and went straight from cash to QR codes.

How does credit work?

I had a UnionPay debit card when I lived there. Do they not exist anymore?

Thanks. Good to know if I ever visit China anytime soon. I assume for most people the app is just linked to a credit card (or could be).

Not really any different than a credit card, imo.

The energy required to break the train full is a lot less than the energy required to move the train empty back up the hill.

Why is the Biden administration dragging its feet on work permits for migrants?

Because it’s a right wing government and doesn’t like them?

Does acting faster increase the chances of 2024 electoral success?

Labor shortage has definitely been a driver of inflation.

Labor shortages:

A) Do not exist.
B) Even if they did, they definitely should not be used as a reason to import cheap labor.

(I’m in favor of immigration, but because it’s the right thing to do, not because of any other reasons)

They are linked to your bank account. Apparently now it’s possible to set it up where you can fund your Alipay wallet via foreign credit card.

I don’t know if banks issue physical credit cards anymore, but Alipay also has a gazillion financial products. Alipay’s credit score system is often conflated with the so-called “social credit” which, depending on the exact details of what people have read/heard, doesn’t really exist.

ATM cards are still a thing and years ago I sometimes used it to pay stuff.

this is apparently the new right wing anthem about hard working blue collar REAL americans.
its mindboggling how people can listen to this song and then come to the conclusion that they need to vote for the side who passed a law taking water breaks away from construction workers.

How is this any different than every other aggrieved white guy country song of the last 50 years?

Yes so these rich men who control everything and hate paying their workers… which political party do they almost unanimously support?

white people feel a lot more aggrieved now than they did 50 years ago that’s really the main difference

he spends like one verse on talking about how bad the rich people are and then immediately goes into fox news talking points about how obese people using welfare to buy fudge rounds are the real problem

They could pay us more if they didn’t have to pay the women and undesirables the same!
