2023 Israel Conflict - Ground Forces Enter Gaza

I was thinking more about climate issues than anything. At some point the climate crisis is going to cause wars that are massive in scale

i quickly looked at what was said and what her official statement on the website said. i did not see any reference to hamas, and the word “resistance” appeared as an abstract response to “apartheid” and “occupation”. i am sure this isn’t the only thing she has ever said about it but nevertheless.

The path to that future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.

there is a disconnect between terms like pro-israel/palestine in the discourse, and what it IMO should mean. i think it is possible to call yourself pro-israel and be anti-likud/et al, in the sense that the israeli right wing are totally authoritarian and even fascist. i can be for a peaceful secular israel and against oppression of the palestinian territories. And also think that israel’s military response was often orders of magnitude more powerful than terrorist attacks themselves, and this war is by no means an exception. The military actions harmed palestinian civilians, and by that i mean past and present. i also think hamas militants are terrorists, and according to videos we’ve already seen, some number of non-military combatants (no uniforms, nothing but a gun in their hands) crossed the border and committed atrocities against israeli civilians. it should also be possible to be pro-palestine and anti-hamas, and anti-terror (past and present).

Again, all of this is basically the mainstream liberal position. The issue is that a bunch of groups from Harvard to BLM to the DSA misinterpreted the widespread, growing support for a Palestinian state and Palestinian self-determination as being on their side in an existential “from the river to the sea” holy war, and consequently blew up their position as leftists by showing 0 remorse for the victims of the attacks.

Thinking about US policies towards the Middle East, how important a goal should it be to protect Israel?
  • Very important
  • Somewhat important
  • Not too important
  • Not at all important
  • Not sure

But precisely because Palestinians cannot hope to prevail in a contest of brute force, it is incumbent on their champions to make the case for their liberation in terms that honor the basic rights of Israelis. If we posit that some ethnic groups have a unique claim to specific stretches of land, and that they also have the right to commit war crimes so as to secure this heritage, then we will do the Israeli far-right’s ideological work for it. When supposed leftists embrace calls for the expulsion of all Jewish “settlers” from “the river to the sea,” they pit one group’s account of why its historical victimization gives it carte blanche to commit ethnic cleansing against another group’s account of the same. In a contest between competing visions of ethno-nationalist domination, the Palestinians cannot win.

I think it should be very important. It’s not like they can just emigrate to a neighboring country. I guess they could all move to Europe/America but that would an absolutely massive migration.

Likewise, it should be very important to enforce human rights for those in Gaza.

obviously the people should be protected, as should all people everywhere that we can. but i’m an agnostic that has moved across the country several times so i dont have a personal view on the value of specific patches of dirt or sand.

Just read a story about a young woman killed at the music festivals. Her family had just moved to Israel so they put up a post to get ten people to come to the funeral to form the required minyan, a Jewish religious requirement. Thousands showed up. Even in the worst of times people show their best.

In Wednesday’s caucus meeting, according to two sources, a member discussed wanting both Jewish and Muslim constituents to feel comfortable attending events to support each other, and that they had heard Muslim clerics did not attend a vigil on Tuesday night in their district.

Sitting in the back of the room and speaking to another attendee, Gottheimer made a remark. Some present thought he was responding to comments from the front of the room and saying Muslim clerics felt guilty. Gottheimer’s comment left many in the room stunned, according to a member in the room.

According to two sources with knowledge of the meeting, Gottheimer was heard saying, “It’s because they’re guilty.” A Democrat in the room said that, after making his remark, Gottheimer could be seen having an animated discussion about it with Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas.

Another good interview by Isaac Chotiner

Yea, this whole conflict is a great example that really highlights the goodness of humanity towards their fellow man. The decapitated babies really highlight it.

People say dumb things but you’d have to have some extreme blinders on to think that it’s an academic only thing.
