There’s a reason he used a screenshot. This is literally just a letter to the editor, not any sort of study. That letter uses this page below as a source for the number of heart attacks and deaths. It’s worth noting that Mike Leech is one of these “athletes” and so is this guy “Gary Tiller (62), Curling player who represented Newfoundland province. He died after a ‘brief battle with cancer.’”

His “cite” is to a letter to the editor. So, he’s referencing his almost certainly crap study (published? where?)in a response letter to the editor to another letter to the editor of a real journal.

Not to diminish what you do at all, but I empathize with the watchers. I do think part of the additional emotional response of people who are watching but not doing anything is the sense of powerlessness, and not having anything to do other than worry. I’ve never really been bothered by the sight of blood when administering first aid, but I am way more bothered if I am just watching rather than doing something, and, like, one time when I just watched a video of open heart surgery where I knew for absolute fact that the patient was going to be fine, I passed the fuck out. Having something productive to focus on doing to help the situation can be a far better mental state to deal with than just looking on in horror and impotence. I don’t envy the people who are working through these crises, but I think it would be even worse to just watch them all.

I wonder if a possible scenario is to delay only the AFC playoffs by a week? That way the league gets half their playoffs, and the Bills/Bengals would play in a huge game the same weekend.
There’s some advantage to the extra week before the SB. But it’s also a huge distraction. Maybe the AFC teams would put up with it.
I know what you mean. Some years back, I was at a jai alai fronton here in Florida when a patron went down about 40 feet away from me. It wasn’t simple fainting either. It was pretty obviously a cardiac situation. There were people around him trying to help, but his wife was so upset and the situation seemed so dire that I was mortified. I stood up from my seat to get a better look and felt like I was going to pass out, so I had to sit right back down and fortunately stayed conscious. They didn’t need another person dropping over in that moment.
