2022 Midterm Elections (Abandon hope all ye who enter here) butnahhh. or maybe?

Oh ok, my bad. Yeah I mean Ohio is a really tough lift but I think he’s a pretty ideal candidate. Somewhat progressive, but doesn’t present as a lefty. Middle aged white guy. Some righteous anger to defend the middle and working class. Not totally unlike Sherrod Brown, who’s farther left and less angry, but one of our best VAR senators. Maybe the best? I mean he’s probably top 5 just overall. Inarguably top 7.

  1. Bernie
  2. Markey
  3. Warren
  4. Brown
  5. Warnock
  6. Schatz

I dunno where I’d go after that. Hirono, maybe?

Fetterman would slide into the top 3 for sure, though, if he wins. VAR right now is probably Brown, Warnock, Tester, in the top three spots, then it gets complicated. Like Tester is a Democrat from Montana who I’m pretty sure has never withheld his vote and fucked us on anything. He’s not out there being super progressive or anything, but he’s not being a tool like Manchin either.

I’m not even sure about that. Like MTG is insane, and she’s dumb enough to fall for stupid conspiracy bullshit or not understand ~anything about how policies work, but her brain functions to the extent that she can like form coherent sentences from a grammatical standpoint and probably navigate adult life.

Walker pretty clearly has CTE and probably other mental health issues, like I’d feel awful making fun of him if not for the fact that he’s a major threat to public health if he becomes a senator. He struggles to speak coherently, and if he were poor and not famous he’d probably either be living with family providing for him or homeless. I don’t think he would be capable of navigating adult life on his own in America.

Baldwin and Ossoff up there in VAR. And probably an unpopular take, but so is Manchin. The fact that we have a D senator in the state where Trump got the 2nd highest percentage of votes is quite a feat. I know people hate him because, well, he does suck. But he’s super valuable, even if he can only be counted on for votes on executive and judicial appointments.

I feel perfectly fine making fun of Walker’s dissociative identity disorder.

Her family bought her an internship, which was leaked in the podesta emails

Btw she’s the granddaughter of a billionaire, her uncle is the one who tried running Qualcomm after Irwin Jacobs stepped down, and her father is the failson of the family jkjk

lol her wikipedia page says that unpaid internship was a “policy advisor” position in the hillary campaign

Gotta vote for local elections to help build up a deep bench of viable candidates for higher office. Unless a billionaire dilettante decides to run on a lark, then you have to vote for them.

The polls are tightening for Texas governor. Do people still believe that Beto ruined any longshot chance at winning by speaking in favor of gun control during the presidential primaries?

lol Texas

Feels like Dems should do whatever it takes to provoke him.

no one had to vote for her. it was a dem v dem race.

Gomez, her opponent, checks all the progressive boxes but keeps losing. She’s now running for state assembly against another Dem (who is DEFINITELY a shitty eDem) and is going to lose there, too. I like Georgette a lot, but she is just not a good campaigner.

She did well in city council, and if she won i have no doubt she’d be a great legislator. The trouble is, you have to be a good campaigner to win…and she isn’t.

Or have a bucketful of money and/or powerful people in your pocket.

FYP

Gomez did have most of the endorsements and had a ton of $ from the party.

Oh I wasn’t speaking to this case specifically, just noting that many awful campaigning politicians are elected due to external factors.

What a shit show.

I used to argue that Manchin had a high VAR, but not so much anymore. I mean, you could make a strong case the Dems would be better off if it were 51-49 GOP in the Senate right now with Manchin swapped for a Trumpy Republican. They could at least blame the failure to get anything done on McConnell and Republicans, and they’d still have gotten the BIF most likely. They might have even given us the SCOTUS seat since it has no impact on the balance of power and is unlikely to matter for like 40 years. It would have been a great chance for them to look reasonable on the court at a very low cost.

I think they can still do this very easily.

I was looking at Illinois’ legislative breakdown and if Joe had those majorities I think he would be a lot more popular.

In a 51-49 GOP Senate, the American Rescue Plan doesn’t pass. And lol if you think they give up that SCOTUS seat (but Breyer probably doesn’t retire, then).

Yeah, but that bill is going to have no positive impact for them on 2022 or 2024 elections, and might actually hurt them in a few ways - it’s going to be blamed for inflation and some of that stuff sunsetting is going to work against them because they didn’t manage to extend it.

Which is also why ultimately I wouldn’t mind if it hadn’t passed. If some of that stuff was permanent instead of sunsetting after a year or whatever, then at least it would be a win that might stand for a while.
