2022 Midterm Elections (Abandon hope all ye who enter here) butnahhh. or maybe?

I’ve seen a Ron Johnson ad a few times tonight.

A series of people at a gas station give comments about how high gas prices suck, one women speaks vaguely about what kind of politician she wants.

The only person who mentions Ron Johnson at all is an older white guy, a self-described “little guy”. He is featured twice.

I mean, I guess it makes sense for the out-of-power party to simply highlight economic woes, but I was expecting the other people in the ad to come back on and also say Ron Johnson’s their guy.

I was doing a little research for the less popular elections in the Illinois primary. There was one for Water Reclamation Commissioner (can vote up to 3). 6-year term. Was doing a little bit of research and I shit you not, there was an 84-year-old candidate. I had to double-check another website to make sure that was correct. WTF

probably been there his entire life, and probably never had to lift a finger to actively campaign.

And probably republican.

Cook County…

There were something like 8 candidates for 3 seats.

Narrator: Vance won by 7 points.

Looked up center street pac and it sounds like a third way clone. Pretty :harold: that he’s still not cracking the low 40s in what’s likely a poll that’s very shaded towards him.

I’ll wait to see what trafalgar has to say before placing any bets.

I wouldn’t call Tim Ryan a Third Way clone.

Yeah, I didn’t lol. I called Center Street PAC a Third Way clone.

ETA: he’s still losing though lol. Hope I’m somehow wrong but never underestimate lol Ohio.

I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around the possibility of Herschel Walker being a Senator. There are some dumb Senators, but he would be multiple standard deviations stupider than any of them. He’s only be challenged in stupidity by a handful of members of the House.

Like, even Senators in his own party who would agree with him on issues would have to be sitting there wondering how the fuck they are supposed to work with him. He literally doesn’t know anything. Nothing at all.

The GOP is fine with useful idiots, though. They know he wouldn’t be writing legislation or anything like that, just voting pretty much exactly as his advisors tell him, which is great for the party.

The Democrats are the ones that would shoot themselves in the foot if, say, some dumb celeb tried to run in a red state and was actually popular enough to maybe flip the seat blue. They’d clutch their pearls about how he/she isn’t Senate material and raise millions for the shitlib eDem candidate in the primary, who would then lose by 20 points in the general.

Lol, this is almost exactly what happened in a congressional district here. Dems endorsed and gave millions (including $4m that was supposed to go to the campaign I worked for :rage:) to the former city councilwoman who was basically an eDem because she knew everyone and had ins with the party machine (oddly, she was also the more progressive candidate in this case). The young, good-looking, charismatic daughter of a billionaire ran against her with no endorsements or party backing, and won by 20 points.

Fortunately, both were Dems in this case, and the winner has turned out to be not nearly as terrible as everyone thought, but the DCCC and DSCC have a terrible lack of ability to read the room (or the constituency)

I assume you’re talking about the race where the candidate with ties to Hilary Clinton beat the one endorsed by Warren, Bernie, and AOC?

Yep.

Jacobs was mostly self-funded (by her family, which founded Qualcomm). In Congress, she’s been fairly progressive, is a member of the M4A caucus and the progressive caucus.

Did she “buy the seat”? Probably. Is she terrible? not really. Was she a better candidate for the district in 2020? Definitely. Her district included a lot of east county, which is much more conservative. I’m sorry, UP people, but the Bernie endorsement was probably a nail in Gomez’s coffin in La Mesa and Lemon Grove.

Not to mention, Gomez, while a great person and great leader once elected, is a terrible campaigner/public speaker
