The greatest Canadian musician is Leonard Cohen and it’s not close.
I’m pretty sure Get Back was generational too… I don’t think that popularity was primarily driven by teenagers or even people under 35, but, sure, Bill Simmons and Chuck Klosterman will do a two hour pod about it, no problem…
I’m not a big Beatles fan, but I at least remember people making a big deal out of their collection being remastered. I remember people making a big deal about them getting their own Rock Band game that was just their catalogue. Get Back was an event last year. They’ve had Across the Universe and been used more in movies/TV.
I just can’t remember much Elvis in pop culture beyond parody in my lifetime. The 1998 World Cup ad that used “a little more conversation” was great and got a very young me to DL that song on Napster though!
I think a reasonable case can be made for Joni Mitchell or Neil Young.
What in fucking tarnation is going on in this thread
Neil Peart goat
In Canada on the radio you have content laws which dictate I believe 30% of songs played have to be by a Canadian artist so you get some weird “popular” acts pushed here.
i’ll give you writer-composer-educator, but that’s not all that musicians are. like he couldn’t song and play and shake his hips like elvis while people are screaming ar him and making it sound good at the same time.
Musician yes. Lyricist not even close.
What’s the claim here again? That Elvis is overrated?
I think it’s that his actual music has very little cultural relevance in pop culture of the last 2-4 decades.
I have no idea how film gets developed now, but back in the day the process was partially manual even when a big machine was doing most of the work, and a key part of what a good developer did was make adjustments on the fly. So they saw everything, and anything really bad was absolutely handed over to the police. Happened pretty frequently too.
I also have no idea how y’all are talking about popular Canadian musicians and not mention The Dead South. Buncha olds itt.
If this is true, then I’d definitely just pass.
Even if he can get past the developing, there may be a problem. Let’s say that @CanadaMatt3004 actually had the pictures developed when he was a kid, and mom just give him a box with the pictures. So now he’s got some nudes of an underaged girl. Although they were taken consensually when he was the same age, I think even that might technically be enough to get busted for kiddie porn.
So even if he gets past the developing problem, just having possession of them could be a problem. So I guess if he does develop, he’s gotta burn any of those that may come up.
I mean, being first counts for a lot. A whole lot. And if we’re criticizing late careers, John Lennon was part of this abomination:
But OK, can you at least tell us like, 5 Elvis songs you listened to and hated, and 5 of your favorite Beatles songs, so we can get some context for your taste?
I forgot Yesterday came out like three years ago. That movie would not work with Elvis as a stand in.
Would be curious how many people who are defending Elvis are over 40.
I’m way over 40. Ofc it’s generational. But you have to account for the times and it’s Clovis who isn’t considering this when he says Elvis isn’t relevant/influential. Which is funny bc he’s studied history. It’s like if I say “That Galileo… he was no Einstein.”
I know Corb a little. Play poker with him sometimes. His first band was called the smalls. They were the best local punk metal band of the early 90s. I once ended up in the hospital from one of their moss pits.
