I dunno if it’ll make you feel better, but there’s always underlying issues with something like that. Nobody literally kills themselves over an election. Suicide is frequently impulsive, but it requires a background of a lot of suffering and isolation (whether real or perceived) and a sense of hopelessness.
tl;dr your friend’s grandfather wasn’t on course for a happy retirement if Trump won.
