Working out / health and fitness

Yeah, that’s a reason I hardly deadlift is b/c of all the chicks doing hip thrusters. Another is I fucked up my back in January doing too heavy of deadlifts. I only recently (last couple of months) got the courage to do them again. Also my grip sucks. Even if I wanted to lift heavier I couldn’t.

Lol. Guys. Any polite option here is clearly fine.

Chill out a little. These minor social gym questions are supposed to be fun.

I get the sense from several media sources that Australia is generally a much chiller place than the US

Are you doing mixed grip with chalk?

No just using traditional/hook grip. If I once deadlifted 405 with that l, I can do it again.

Deadlifts are too good of a lift to waste potential by letting my grip strength dictate how much I can put up, IMO. I switch to mixed grip for >250lb, straps for >350lb and it’s just whatever. Sure I could build amazing grip strength by trying to eke out every rep I possibly can with double overhand, but I’d rather just put up as much weight as I can without complicating it further.

Yeah. If you do overhand grip on warmup sets as heavy as you can you will still improve get plenty of grip work.

I’m in the middle of my training block, and the last 5 days of running have been

  • 7.5 miles
  • 6 miles
  • 6 miles
  • 12 miles
  • 6 miles

Normally I wouldn’t run so many days in a row, but I had to move some days around. The plus side is I can pretty much eat whatever I want. Right now I’m having a Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie.

Inspired by econophile, I’m about to solo a rocky road cookie from Levain Bakery.

I cannot wait for this stupid marathon thing to be over. I am so tired all the time, and the worst part is that I have this enormous doubt that I’m going to be ready for it, since this dumbass plan that I’m “following” maxes out at a 16 mile long run.

Update: I’m probably going to vomit, and I am never eating anything ever again.

Question for those more trained in injuries than I am:

On Sunday afternoon I waa vaccuuming the stairs, slipped, and slid about the length of three stairs, hurting my right knee. I was able to limp around and eventually walk with little to no pain (save for some going up and down the stairs.) Yesterday, things improved and I had little pain working from home. This morning everything seemed fine, but driving into work my knee started bothering me. Went to the store and was able to walk around fine, got back in the car, and putting pressure to accelerate or break was causing pain just below the knee.

Getting to work and out of the car I started limping, still able to put weight on but less than earlier. When I sit down, things seem fine. I have pretty normal range of motion/ability to move the knee in and out from a sitting position without much trouble.

It is MUCH more difficult to stand/put weight on it now though, to the point I am limping hard with every step. When I stand up straight and lock my knee and then put weight on it, there is pretty severe pain below the kneecap.

Any ideas? Why would it flare up like this two days after a fall? How does the driving motion fit into all this?

Knee injuries suck because there are many ways to injure it. Even if it’s a torn meniscus there are a bunch of different ways and subareas to tear it. Sometimes if you strain a tendon or whatnot there can be a delay in the pain, so it could just be that. But I think sometimes a torn meniscus can be delayed a little as well. I would get it looked at. I would RICE it in the meantime

fwiw I’m not trained in knee injuries at all but I have had a couple and done a little research

I’m getting my left knee checked out tomorrow. It’s been sore for the last two weeks and doesn’t seem to be getting much better. It’s weird though because the pain is mainly in the back and side of the knee. The joint itself seems pretty solid. I’ll be interested in learning how they make a diagnosis in a case like this, because I have no clue how I hurt it or exactly when I did it.

When I hiked the PCT, near the end I could not eat enough, no matter how hard I tried. At first it was fun eating whatever I wanted. But it was never enough. I got tired of chewing and swallowing. Also I think the sheer volume of food fucked up my digestive system permanently

All I can say is don’t wait to get your knee checked out and be persistent about getting a correct diagnosis (it might require an MRI to do this).

Yesterday i completed my final rehab session (knock on wood) and my left knee finally feels back to normal–close to two years after first injuring it, and over a year after surgery for a torn meniscus.

The whole recovery process might have gone much quicker had I been able to get a correct diagnosis and get the necessary surgery sooner.

Goddamn I dont want surgery

Man I started weight lifting again and tried to ramp up way too fast. Tried upping my bench and my shoulder exercises and woke up with shoulders popping any time I did something that put my shoulders in an awkward position and could barely do any kind of should raise without any weight. Going to take two weeks off to heal up. Getting older is no fun. Ramping up wouldn’t have bothered me at all when I was younger.

There are lots of ways to fuck up a knee that don’t require surgery, so don’t despair yet. But I agree with @Ikioi get it checked out asap

I’d see if it stops hurting after a few days and then just ignore it either way.

I need this ailment.

Seriously. All old fuckers itt need to heed this.

My general rule is don’t go hard until the third session on any lift I haven’t done in a while.

Also I don’t change up my routine much because when I do something always starts hurting.
