Winter 2021 LC Thread—I Want Sous Vide

The Primavera lineup for next year is insane
It’s 10 days!

IMO that video could just as easily be used as a case for limiting. Minor thing but I love how he calls them the drums. Yeah, they’re drums he’s not technically wrong, but the one that happens to be an upper mids and presence laser beam of sound being that fucking loud in the mix is maybe something you’d want to keep separate tabs on.

This? This isn’t worth watching I was just taking stock of yootoob opinions. It fits Internet Guitar Guy so perfectly though. They are why I don’t post on guitar forums anymore. Imagine thinking that “modern recordings sound bad” is a good take in 2021 and then queuing up a bunch of terrible dbx-compressed classic rock with no sub-bass.

If I, as a guy who will go weeks at a time without voluntarily listening to music, were to hastily summarise this clearly very technical discussion as “Audiophilia is basically wine-tasting” how out of line would I be?

There are clearer differences with wine but much more objective ones with audio.

I don’t really know how to parse that, I think it’s maybe a little at cross-purposes with my intent. I’m really talking about the yootoob Guitar Guys Lawnmower Man mentioned and the fact that (an awful lot of) oenophilia is pretty much bunk. Which isn’t to say that wine criticism can’t be valid or anything, but there’s clearly a lot of BS in it, and seemingly there’s this popular myth of modern music production being bad that’s objectively false.

Opinion by

Marc A. Thiessen

Biden knows that he was not elected to enact a radical, left-wing agenda. When Republicans warned he would do so, he laughed and said, “I beat the socialist! … Do I look like a socialist?” He won the White House by promising to pursue bipartisanship. But now he is breaking that promise in an effort to jam through as much socialist spending as he can on party-line votes.

Lol Marc, what’s socialist spending as opposed to normal spending?

I’ve heard from several people recently that the Valve Index is the way to go. You may want to research a bit. I’ll probably grab the Valve Index after this summer is over.

Socialist spending = money that goes to the wrong people.

I’m saying you’re basically correct but the differences that do exist are more subjective with wine and more objective with audio, while the ability of the average person to notice them are higher with wine and lower with audio.

If I give you two different vintages of zinfandel from different vineyards you’ll probably be able to tell them apart, but there may not be anything close to a correct answer as to which is better. If I play you the same track as a 256kb mp3 and as an uncompressed wave, one of those is objectively better than the other but hardly anybody can hear that difference (and most people who say they can are lying).

We have reached perfect agreement.

This strikes me as a good reason to wait. The market is way too frothy. If interest rates go up 1% I bet prices will start going down.

Am blank on 6 and 7, and I’m the sort who listens to newish music (sometimes) and goes to festivals (sometimes). Hell, i’ve considered going to this one, but the lineup isn’t good enough for a trip to Chicago, through it will probably be great as one of the first big post covid festivals.

Pitchfork has the better lineup than Lolla this year and I’ve heard that it’s a lot more fun of a time in general (been to lollapalooza x2, never p4k).

A quick google confirms you are correct. I may have to check with a friend about potentially going to PF. I don’t know many of the acts, but I’d go to hang and to see Animal Collective.

3-day “Plus” tickets already sold out, now selling for $600+.

I like a majority of them. Jay Electronica had the best hip hop album of last year. Only about 3 each day I’m unaware of.

Music quality aside, Lollapalooza is going to be some crazy ass shit, in the best and worse ways. Gonna be a bacchanal, but the Foo Fighters, Miley, and general broad spectrum of acts is going to make it a crazy mixed crowd.

Ok, so looks like I’ll be going to at least one festival.

Pretty sure that festival lineup qualifies as dadrock

I avoided the dad rock discussion because I don’t think it’s a coherent category. I’m mainly stoked because I really like Jane’s Addiction and my best music bud (who I’ve seen Jane’s with a few times) moved to a nice place in Redondo a couple of months ago. So it will be like having a deluxe Air B&B for the weekend.
