He could have offered her ambassador to Tahiti
How can you seriously write this post in 2026? Jesus. This is why the left loses so fucking much.
Trump is basically a SCOTUS puppeteer and you ask what power POTUS has over SCOTUS?
Why hasn’t Trump ejected the justices who disagree with him if he has the power to do so? Why is KJB still in office?
Yes, I am asking what leverage Obama had over RBG that could compel her to quit. No one has an answer to that.
The goal post. You moved it.
You were arguing POTUS had no political power over SCOTUS.
Similar leverage to what people had over biden.
Could get George Clooney to go on a speaking tour talking about what a hero RGB is for considering retiring to allow Obama to appoint another scotus. Then he could give her a producer credit and cameo in his next film.
fyp
In that case let’s make it a TV show produced by Mark Burnett
I want to know how Obama could have compelled RBG to retire against her will, that was the start of this whole discussion.
We’re already in a TV show produced by Mark Burnett. It’s called ‘The Idiot’.
I don’t want to wade into any arguments here.
But I do think a key belief of the Dems in my lifetime, and something they have trained their voters to believe, is that they are basically impotent even when in power.
Nothing can be done!
Some have done it cynically: they knew something could be done but they didn’t want anything to really change.
Many D voters, and some with actual power, genuinely believed it: there was nothing that could be done! You don’t understand.
A tiny positive in the sea of shit we are floating on is the rising generation of voters and people in power who no longer believe this lie.
Trump’s insanity has shown some that there was plenty that could’ve been done by someone who wanted actual change.
And anger at Trump has led some voters who have accepted the lie that nothing could be done to demand action of some sort.
I remember talking to my wife about the once-insane but then somewhat real possibilty that the election that year might be between Trump and Bernie! I was stunned but somewhat giddy: things are going to actually change!
That one didn’t go the way I hoped in the primary or general election. But I think I was right. Things were beginning to change.
Voters are done with the message that nothing can be done to make this country better. Time to use power and take a shot at it or get out of the way.
Great post. I hope you are right about the last sentence but I am far less confident.
My mild optimism could be dead wrong.
But the Mamdani win, Platner winning a D primary easily, and El Sayed favored in the same are all things that would’ve been impossible in 2012.
Nithya Ramen becoming Mayor of LA would be a good addition to this list.
True. The Mamdani win is especially awesome given how much it’s rustled the right.
Still waiting for you guys to tell me what specifically you think Obama should have done to force out RBG.

Even if RBG retired, there’s no guarantee Cocaine Mitch brings it to a vote to confirm.
Doubt he would have.
Drone strike.
