What are you reading?

Which 3? I’m most excited for Apt Pupil.

Thats my favorite, then Shawshank, then The Body. Breathing Method is fine, but not something I would call one of his best works

I have read every piece of fiction connected to the DT series (that I’m aware of)

Really like the story in hearts Atlantis

I did a full te read of it all about 5-6 years ago. It’s SK most best great work

I would not recommend (hey read these 8 novels and 16 short stories etc ) in a thread like this for SK noobs

Yeah DK is great. Will probably reread them all again around 2035 or so

Still haven’t got to the wheel of time. Started the Bosch universe last year so i am weaving one of those in every 5th book or so

Matt I think we might be Goodreads friends. Someone from 2+2 named Matt ended up on my list it might be you.

Never used Good Reads, so probably not.

Of the stories in Hearts in Atlantis, I actually like the title story best. The desperation of the addiction of the hearts game and what it can mean for these young guys who are of draft age is super haunting. That plus the love story is one of Steve’s best.

Does anybody have any reads on the Sanderson books? I’ve heard theyre great but they are huge.

I read the Mistborn series. All of them. The main trilogy is solid. Really wraps the story up well

I have not read the big books yet like stormlight or warbringer whatever.

I like him but he has a s
Certain style. Might not be for everyone

I read every Sanderson book. He’s fantastic. Top notch world building and plot. Mediocre characters and medium to poor dialogue, especially in his early books.

Would also recommend Mistborn as a good starting point.

That’s a great way to put it

The world building is amazing. Mistborn trilogy 1. It’s clear he had a plan for all three books and it is really good

My wife read them and also liked them.

Awesome, Ill check it out

I am in total agreement about Hearts in Atlantis. The romance is among his best, and the games of Hearts show every bit of essence toward how it felt for a lot of us playing poker.

Starting in on this bad boy.

Started reading Shogun, only 50 pages in, but already hooked.

I’m curious what Japanese people think about it? Is it a realistic depiction of Japan in 1600, or a bit whitewashed?

I’m trying to get my wife to read it, but she’s always skeptical about white authors writing about other cultures.

Extremely romanticized, and while there are accurate, well-researched elements, it is a work of fiction and should be enjoyed as such. It certainly doesn’t paint Japan/Japanese people in a bad light, but I doubt it was popular here when published, though I was too young to know for sure.

For a book along the similar lines, written by a Japanese author, that was hugely popular in Japan, try Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. I’ve recommended it here before, but if you read though and like Shogun and are hungry for something similar, I would definitely read that next.

Seconding your suggestion for Musashi. I read that countless times as a teenager but have never read Shogun.

Finished Empire of the Summer Moon. Overall quite a sad story. Sometimes it felt like watching Titanic a 2nd or 3rd time and hoping for a better outcome. Gave a lot of insight and a quite different picture about the Indians compared to the movies I enjoyed during my childhood. Never realized before that they were in fact (partly) still living in the stone age.

Also used Audible to listen to HP till Order of Phoenix. My goodness what a difference to the films. Parts of 5th book were actually in the 6th film. From the film alone I am hestitant to listen to the 6th book but now I am curious what actually happened the whole book when they took parts of the 5th book for the 6th film.

Now I am trying to finish Dune and actually looking forward to Shogun before the series comes out.

I am about halfway through the audiobook for Fairy Tale by Stephen King and just wanted to say these are some good eats.

I read the first “3 body problem” book 5+ years ago (im sure most people here have heard of these so won’t describe them). I found it pretty boring and poorly written but forced myself to read it to the end. When about 90% through I realized this was not a stand-alone book but part of a trilogy, I got really annoyed that the person who recommended it to me failed to mention that.

Anyway I started the 2nd book only about a week ago. For the first third or so I had similar feelings as before, then it progressively got better but i was still caught by surprise on how incredible the whole second half was, I basically read it in one go. Now I’ll read the 3rd book immediately, hoping it’s as good as this one.

I can’t bring to mind another example of a series (book, movie or TV) having such a huge jump in quality between two episodes…pretty insane.

I read all three books in two weeks.
